Pre-Business Majors

Students who are on the "pre-business" track must meet the Cox admission requirements to enter the business school as a business major or minor in business administration.  Pre-business majors normally enter Cox in January of the sophomore year.

The admission requirements for this process are completely objective, and changes to the requirements will not impact students while they are enrolled at SMU.  Pre-business students entering SMU in Fall 2010 or after may enter the business school after they have earned 39 academic hours and have a 3.30 all college cummulative and 3.30 business subset GPA.  The first grade earned in subset courses is used to calculate the subset GPA, unless the course was repeated under the SMU First Year Repeat Process. The business subset courses include:

  • English 1301
  • English 1302
  • Micro Economics  (ECO 1311)
  • Macro Economics  (ECO 1312)
  • Business Calculus  (Math 1309 or 1337)
  • Introduction to Financial Accounting  (ACCT 2301)
  • Business Statistics  (STAT 2301 or STAT 2331)

The business subset courses are normally completed as follows:

  • Fall of First Year:  English 1301, Economics 1311, Math 1309
  • Spring of First Year:  English 1302, Economics 1312
  • Fall of Sophomore Year:  Accounting 2301, Statistics 2301

Pre-business majors who also plan a major or minor in engineering should take MATH 1337 (Calculus) instead of MATH 1309 (Business Calculus).
