Current SMU Students
Current SMU students follow the Cox admission requirements outlined in the SMU Catalog for their year of entry to SMU.
Fall 2007 - Summer 2010 Requirements for Admission to Cox for SMU Students:
- A minimum 42 academic credit hours in good standing, and
- A minimum GPA of 3.30 in the business subset. The business subset consists of the first grade earned in the following seven courses of their equivalents:
- English 1301
- English 1302
- Micro Economics (ECO 1311)
- Macro Economics (ECO 1312)
- Business Calculus (Math 1309 or 1337)
- Fundamentals of Accounting I (ACCT 2301)
- Business Statistics (STAT 2301 or STAT 2331)
Subset GPAs are calculated by using the first grade earned in a subset course, unless that course is repeated under SMU's first year repeat rule. Courses completed through AP and IB credit are graded as "CR," and have no impact on the business subset.
Students who do not meet these requirements may add ACCT 2302 to the subset. If they meet the admission requirements with this extended subset (the original seven courses plus ACCT 2302), they are accepted to Cox.
Fall 2010 - Fall 2011 Requirements for Admission to Cox for SMU Students:
- A minimum 39 credit hours, and
- A 3.30 cumulative all-college GPA, and
- A minimum GPA of 3.30 in the business subset.
The cumulative GPA is recorded in the semester that the subset is completed. Students must meet both the cumulative and subset GPAs in the semester that the subset is completed. Students who do not meet this requirement may take ACCT 2302, and if they have a 3.30 cumulative all college GPA and an extended subset GPA (the original seven courses plus ACCT 2302) in the semester that ACCT 2302 is completed, they are accepted to Cox.
The subset GPA calulator can be used to check your subset GPA. Admission requirements are based on the year of entry to SMU. Students who entered SMU prior to Fall 2009 should check with their academic advisor for the requirements applicable to their class.
Admission Process:
Pre-business students sign a major declaration form with their academic advisor in the semester that they will complete the Cox admission requirements. After grades are posted, the advisor will send the major declaration form and the student's file to the Cox BBA Admission Office for processing.
Students who have already declared a major in Dedman College, the Lyle School of Engineering, or Meadows School of the Arts, and who would like to add a second major in Cox should complete a Student Change of Degree Program Request and submit it to Cox BBA Admissions in 254 Maguire, or fax it to 214.768.4929.
Former SMU Students
SMU Cox BBA students who have not been enrolled for over one year must apply for re-admission to SMU through the SMU Registrar and the BBA Advising Office. Contact the BBA Advising Office at 214-768-3195 for details on the re-admission process.
Former SMU students who were not business majors, but who wish to return to SMU to seek a business degree, should work with the Office of the Registrar and the Advising or Records Office at their school of record (Dedman College, Meadows, or Lyle) to begin the readmission process. Non-business majors who have been enrolled at SMU within the past three years must meet the Cox admission requirements outlined in the SMU Catalog in effect for their year of entry to SMU. Those who have not been enrolled in the past three years must meet the Cox admission and degree requirements in effect at the time of their return to SMU.
