Mel Fugate, PhD
Dr. Fugate’s work aims to enhance individual and organizational performance by utilizing a variety of practical and research based tools related to topics, such as leadership development, performance management, organizational culture, compensation, and motivation. His research and consulting span many industries (e.g., legal, energy, healthcare, technology, and financial services) and often involve organizational assessments intended to measure the human resource health of organizations (e.g., employee attitudes). Dr. Fugate also has extensive experience in change management which includes but is not limited to: downsizing, restructurings, mergers and acquisitions, and plant closings. He assists managers in developing, implementing, and evaluating change initiatives designed to enhance employee performance and organizational competitiveness, including the integration and realignment of organizational cultures. Besides these activities, Dr. Fugate speaks on issues related to strategic human resource management, including attracting and retaining talent, and cross-generational management issues (Traditionals, Boomers, Gen X, and Gen Y-Millennials).
Prior to earning his Ph.D. in Business Administration and Management from Arizona State University, Dr. Fugate performed consulting services in marketing and business development and was a manager in the pharmaceutical industry. He also has a degree in Engineering and Business from Michigan State University.
Academic Experience
Dr. Fugate is an Associate Professor of Management and Organizations at the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University. He teaches executive, MBA, and undergraduate courses. Prior to the Cox School he was an Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior at Tulane University’s A.B. Freeman College of Business and an instructor in the Department of Management at Arizona State University’s College of Business. He also has international teaching experience (e.g., International MBA) at EM Lyon Graduate School of Management in Lyon, France.
