What is Marketing?

To some, sitting in front of their TV, marketing is advertising.  To others, on a shopping spree, marketing is selling or retailing.  Marketing is all these and much more! 

According to the American Marketing Association, "marketing is the activity of creating, communicating, delivering and exchanging offerings that benefit the organization, its stakeholders, and society at large."

Put simply, marketing is about making money (or achieving other objectives) by keeping customers happy.  This broad marketing goal is accomplished through the "marketing mix," a set of marketing tools – pricing, promotion, distribution, and the product or service itself - that work together to satisfy customer needs and build customer relationships.

The marketing department at the SMU Cox School of Business strives to attract students passionate about marketing, provide them with adequate knowledge through relevant courses taught by reputed faculty, so that students can pursue rewarding careers upon graduation. 

The department offers a wide range of courses in three programs – BBA, MBA and the Graduate Marketing Certificate Programs.
