Richard Chang (EMBA '11)
SDC Technologies, Vice President/General Manager
• Why did you choose to attend the Cox School?
High profile global ranking, extensive alumni network, renowned faculty and the convenience of alternating Fridays and Saturdays. The diversity and high caliber student profile is very important as it significantly enhances the breadth and depth of classroom discussions. The program has a heavy focus on the 3 P's, people, process, and planning, which are critical to achieving business success. I also attended an info seminar and had the opportunity to sit in on Professor Bill Dillon's and Professor Tassu Shervani's marketing classes. Both are exceptional renowned scholars and had extensive work experience. I was sold at that point!
• How has the Cox Executive MBA Program helped you to achieve your career goals?
In my original application essay, I stated my goal was to become Vice President of a business division upon graduation. In my last semester, I achieved this objective as I joined SDC Technologies (Division of Mitsui Chemicals) as Vice President and General Manager and became an ELT member. This was a high level promotion from my previous position as Business Development Director at Valspar. Recruiters throughout the United States recognize the prominence and strength of the Cox program. Along with LinkedIn, extensive work experience and various Cox networking activities, I was able to leverage all of these strengths to achieve my career goals.
• What advice would you give to candidates considering the Cox Executive MBA Program?
With family, job and travel requirements along with the financial commitment in an uncertain economic environment, the decision is not to be taken lightly. Would I have the necessary time to fully commit to the Executive MBA program (15 to 25 hours/week)? Trust me, you will find the time. During my last semester, I was very fortunate to reach my career objectives by changing companies, was selected as a finalist in the Executive MBA Scholarship Leadership Program, expecting the birth of my first child, travelled globally for 4 months, had an untimely death in the family and graduated with Beta Gamma Sigma honors. You will find the time and by trusting in your study group and family, they will hold you together.
