2010 O'Neil Annual Report

"Looking for the 'New' New World," the O'Neil Center's second annual report essay, started with a relatively simple question: Why are so many people moving from states like California to places like Texas?

W. Michael Cox, O'Neil Center director, and writer Richard Alm looked at a range of possible reasons - from crime rates and unemployment to tax rates and schools. When all was said and done, they found that just six factors drive most net migration within the United States, all but one of them related to differences in state policies.

The SMU Cox BBA: The New Corporate Climb

As a high school senior in Salt Lake City, Mercedes Ulibarri (BBA '11) knew she wanted to pursue an accounting career. As she sought out the best business schools in the nation, the caliber of faculty at Cox caught her attention. "It really comes down to the quality of the professors," Ulibarri says. "They've worked in the field for a long period of time, and they've all done different things. That's given me a good amount of exposure for the types of problems I'll encounter in the accounting field. I now have solutions to fix problems, instead of just being fed the information."

On Being a Brand:
Shout It Out or Be Subtle?

Consumers often spend lavishly to communicate wealth and status to those around them.  Explicit branding through recognizable and obvious logos aids this goal. The idea of conspicuous consumption refers to consumers spending on products that display visible markers of status. Since consumers are motivated to express social status, it follows that higher priced items should have more explicit branding and low-end products should have fewer explicit markers. Right? Not exactly.

In new research, Assistant Marketing Professor Morgan Ward of SMU Cox and co-author Jonah Berger reveal a new twist in the conventional wisdom surrounding our product iconography and branding.

Billie Ida - Ernst & Young Scholarship Endowment brightens future for SMU Cox Master of Science in Accounting (MSA)

billie_williamson-forrester.bba.74

Billie Williamson-Forrester (BBA '74) has been a loyal and involved Mustang since day one. As a Cox accounting student, Forrester excelled in the classroom and beyond citing one of her most cherished involvements as being the student body treasurer.
Even as an undergraduate, Forrester strived to make a positive difference on campus. "I had the opportunity to work with wonderful people and engage with faculty. When you work with good people who propose good solutions, you can see great things accomplished," says Forrester. Thanks to generous supporters like Forrester, great things continue to be accomplished in Cox.
