Faculty Resources
Databases available in the Business Library
Some contracted databases are typically licensed at an educational rate. Where educational rates apply, there may be restrictions concerning which demographic groups are allowed access. Where alumni, continuing education students or workshop participants may require access, it is important to coordinate with Business Library staff prior to making assignments or suggesting resources.
Research Resources
The Faculty Research Guide, developed by Business librarians, highlights the resources of the Business Library, the libraries of Southern Methodist University and selected web links which most apply to faculty research needs.
Reserves
Course materials may be placed on physical reserve in the Business Information Center. The Business Library Course Reserves page provides additional information on course reserves and access to the Business Library course reserves forms.
Items may be placed on electronic reserve with the assistance of reserve staff at SMU's Fondren Library Center. On the Fondren Library reserves services page faculty can find a guide to reserves, links to forms for placing books and photocopies on reserve, and a link to the form to request persistent links (PURLs) to journal articles located in certain SMU library databases.
Software available on Lab Computers
A number of basic software packages are routinely available such as Microsoft Office. Additional software may be loaded at the request of faculty to support specific courses. Please contact support to determine licensing availability and installation parameters.
Class Support
Librarian-led Class Sessions
Librarians are available to show students which resources will help them when doing research in the subject area of your course. Use the Request for Librarian-led Class Session to schedule your session(s). If you are unsure of exactly what would be most useful for your students, contact Karen Leeseberg for a consultation.
Testing and Test Printing
The Business Library is available for students to print test results from their laptops or from Business Library computers. Please coordinate with Business Library staff in advance to insure that computer space is available and to arrange payment for printing costs. Students must place their name in the document header of the test or on a cover page for identification (and confidentiality) purposes.
Group Presentation Room
The Business Library's Group Presentation Room is equipped with the same presentation equipment as the classrooms in the Cox School of Business. Students may use the room to not only practice their presentations, but to also familiarize themselves with the equipment they will use when giving their course presentations. Students check out the room on a first come, first served basis using the online Room Reservation System.
Access to the Library
The Business Library is a restricted access facility open only to current SMU students, staff, faculty, alumni, and approved visitor groups. All users must present a valid SMU ID, alumni card or be authenticated by a class roster to access the physical resources of the facility, including computers, study and presentation rooms, stand alone resources, course reserves, etc. The Business Library does not make exceptions to this policy. Please consult our policies page for additional information about access to the facility.
