Positioning (Personal Introduction) Statement

(a.k.a. ELEVATOR SPEECH,  "ME IN 30 SECONDS" STATEMENT)

A well-developed, concise --- and yet, still conversational --- personal introduction is a critical element of the job search process.   If you think of it in marketing terms, it is the positioning statement for your job search.  You may also hear it commonly referred to as an elevator speech or a "me in 30 seconds" statement.   Whatever you choose to call it, the purpose is the same.  It is a conversation starter- an opportunity to briefly "tell your story" and communicate a message to the listener.   You can use it in a variety of situations but may have to adjust your message to suit the occasion.  Your introduction for a social situation may be different than one used in a job interview or at a networking function.

Remember:
Keep it brief.  Keep it natural.  Speak in present tense.  Remember your audience and adapt your message accordingly.

For job-seekers, your message should include:

  • A brief personal introduction that includes your career objective or type of position you seek
  • 3-4 specific accomplishments that prove you meet or exceed the requirements for the position sought (This is a good opportunity to use your power statements!)
  • A few skills or competencies that set you apart from other applicants and show how you can add value

NOTE:  If used for networking purposes,  close with a call to action or probing question to start a conversation that may lead to referrals or job opportunities.  Examples:  Who do you know that works in _____?  What businesses are in the area that _________?  Who do you know that may have contacts in the area of ___________(geographical location, industry, company, etc)?

Examples:

  • Hi, my name is Mary Anderson and I'm interested in a customer service position.   I enjoy meeting new people and finding ways to help them have an uplifting experience.  I've had a variety of customer service opportunities through which I was able to have fewer returned products and increased repeat customers when compared to co-workers. My ability to listen attentively to the customer helps me focus on ways to understand and better meet their needs.  Who should I speak with in your customer service department about opportunities ?
  • Hi, I'm Joe Accountant, an MSA student graduating next fall, and currently pursuing opportunities with regional public accounting firms.  Since coming to SMU, I've been actively involved with the TSCPA student chapter.   Prior to starting the master's program, I worked for my parents' small business assisting them with bookkeeping.  That experience combined with several accounting courses completed within my Finance major at UT-Austin, confirmed my interest in becoming a CPA. I'm  really glad that your firm came to the career fair today and I was hoping you could tell me more about the kinds of opportunities your firm will be recruiting for in the coming year.
  • Hi, I'm John Doe.    A member of the SMU varsity basketball team, I am also a financial consulting major in the Cox School of Business.  From class projects to sports, I've learned about how important teamwork is.  I have a high energy level and strong analytical and technical skills.  For example, I _______________________.    I am interested in __________________.  Do you _____________?
