BACHELORS OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (BBA)

Admission of External Transfer Students

Transfer students begin the admission process through the SMU Office of Admission by submitted a Transfer Application for Admission to the SMU Office of Admissions by April 1 for the fall semester and November 1 for the spring semester.  The SMU Office of Admissions works with all transfer applicants on questions related to admission and scholarships.  While each school or department within SMU makes the final determination if a course can be accepted for transfer credit, the SMU Office of Admission assists with this process, and can also answer many basic questions about the transfer of courses.

Fall 2007 Requirements for Admission to Cox as a Transfer Student:

  1. Admission to SMU with a minimum 42 transferable academic hours and 2.50 transfer GPA, and
  2. A minimum GPA of 3.30 in the business subset. The business subset consists of the first grade earned in the following seven courses (with the exception of "W" grades):
              English 1301
              English 1302
              Micro Economics (ECO 1311)
              Macro Economics (ECO 1312)
Business Calculus (Math 1309 or 1337)
Fundamentals of Accounting I (ACCT 2311)
Business Statistics (STAT 2301 or STAT 2331)

The SMU Office of Admission works with students who have not met these requirements to determine their best course of action. These applicants may be considered for admission to SMU as a non-business or pre-business major, or may be able to meet the Cox admission requirements by extending the seven-course subset to also include the first attempt of ACCT 2312.

SMU Cox wants transfer students to have a smooth transition into the school. We encourage admitted transfer students to schedule an appointment with a Cox School academic advisor to discuss their degree plans, review their transfer credit, and begin academic planning.

Questions about admission to Cox as a transfer student should be directed to the SMU Admissions Office at (214) 768-2058.  Questions about the transferability of specific business courses should be directed to the BBA Advising Office at (214) 768-3195.

Acceptance of Transfer Credit Prior to Entering SMU

Official transcripts from all previous colleges attended should be sent to the SMU Office of Admissions. In order for courses to be accepted and transfer, they must:

  • Be equivalent to courses offered at SMU
  • Have been completed with a grade of C- or better. With the exception of wellness, courses completed without letter grades (pass/fail or satisfactory/unsatisfactory) will not be accepted in transfer.

Regardless of the number of acceptable transfer hours, at least 60 hours must be completed at SMU for any SMU degree. Of the 48 required business hours, a minimum of 30 hours must be completed in the Cox School.

Transfer credit from community or junior colleges:
In the case of credit completed at a junior college prior to entering SMU, only courses with SMU equivalents at the first-year and sophomore level (1000- and 2000-level courses) will be accepted in transfer. Questions about the transferability of specific business courses should be directed to the BBA Advising Office at (214) 768-3195. Students at community colleges are encouraged to utilize the online community college equivalency guides for:

Dallas County Community Colleges
Tarrant County Community Colleges
Collin County Community Colleges

Special requirements for transferring business courses:
Prior to matriculation, SMU Cox will accept in transfer all equivalent business courses completed at schools accredited by AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), provided those courses were completed with a grade of C- or better and are equivalent to courses offered at SMU. The only business classes accepted in transfer from community or junior colleges, or from schools not accredited by the AACSB, will be Fundamentals of Accounting I and II. A complete list of AACSB-accredited schools is available from the AACSB.

Questions about the transferability of specific business courses should be directed to the BBA Advising Office at (214) 768-3195.

Acceptance of transfer credit after entering SMU:
Students who are already enrolled at SMU should review the transfer credit policies in the Advising Section.
