Recommended Accessories

USB Thumb Drives

  • 128 MB Minimum
  • Holds about 100 floppies worth of information
  • More durable and portable than floppies
  • Most computing labs on campus have USB ports available
  • Thumb drives are far less likely to fail than floppy disks
  • Most are small enough to fit on a keychain
  • Many come built in to other devices such as pens or watches

Laptop Case

  • The laptop case should be well padded to prevent incidental damage to the laptop during transport.
  • The padding should cover all 4 sides as well as the top and bottom the case
  • The case should be convienent to carry
  • It should also be convienent to place the laptop, power supply, and any other commonly transported accessories into the case as well as removing all these items.  We suggest that you take your laptop and accessories when shopping to test this before purchasing a case.

Port Replicator or Docking Station

  • This allows the laptop to be convienently connected to full size, external devices such as a monitor, keyboard and mouse.
  • This makes for a more comfortable working environment when using the laptop at home or in a dorm room.
  • These devices can either be purchased from a generic vendor or from the laptop's manufacturer.
  • They can also allow the computer, when docked, to be connected to various other peripheral devices such as printers, external hard drives, scanners, etc.
  • Many of these provide additional USB ports, acting as a USB hub.

Wireless Mouse

  • Many users do not like or are uncomfortable with the built in pointing devices for most laptops.
  • Wirless mice come in many sizes from standard desktop size to thumb-sized units.
  • If cases where the mouse cable does not allow sufficient range of motion, a wireless unit is a simple and inexpensive solution.

Wireless Keyboards

  • Wireless keyboard can be used in a variety of positions which can make for a more comfortable computing experience.

Wireless Card

  • Most areas of campus have wireless network access and those that are not currently covered are slated to be included.
  • Refer to the wireless card guidelines for more information.

Extra Power Adapter

  • They can be ordered either as a generic "replacement" adapter or from the laptop's maker.
  • Having a spare in case the original is lost or non-functional can be quite the lifesaver.
