Cox Charter of Community Conduct
Students of the Cox School of Business have made the decision to join an exceptional educational community. As members of this community, all have the responsibility to wholly understand and honor the code of conduct that guides our behavior. The Cox Charter of Community Conduct serves as this code and is central to our personal and professional growth, to our development of community, and to the reputation we earn in the greater business and civic communities.
As members of the Cox Community, we agree to:
- Encourage participation in activities both inside and outside of the classroom to help the Cox School build a strong community among its students, faculty, staff, and the outside business community.
- Respect the rights of others, maintain responsible behavior conducive to the teaching and learning environment, and uphold the integrity of the Cox School of Business both on and off campus.
- Follow the Cox Honor Code when making decisions relative to coursework, exams, and interactions between students, faculty, and staff.
- Report any activity of possible academic dishonesty, harassment, abuse, or other infraction by any Cox student, faculty, or staff member to the appropriate Cox official. Swift conflict resolution is important within the Cox community.
- Conduct all activities by electronic media (laptops, desktop computers, cell phones, etc.) in a professional manner at all times by:
- Never sending inappropriate content via e-mail.
- Never surfing the Internet or engaging in instant messaging, or similar activities, during class time.
- Never interruptinging or disruptinging your fellow classmates, the professor, or or a guest speaker by inappropriate use of your laptop computer.
- Always turning off cell phones and pagers during class time and other Cox School of Business events and activities.
- Adhere to the guidelines set forth by the various Cox educational centers; such as the BIC, the BLC, the Career Management Center, and others, by following the rules and guidelines unique to those centers.
- Reach out and communicate in an open and respectful manner at all times with all members of the Cox community. Diversity is applauded and differences embraced at Cox. Harassment of any nature is not tolerated.
- Attend Cox sponsored events. Regularly attending events hosted by the Cox community promotes dialogue, enhances the Cox educational experience, and builds a professional network. Speaker series, guest lectures, club events, seminars, and other events should be a priority within the Cox educational experience.
- Accept leadership roles within the Cox School of Business. Leadership comes in all forms including, but not limited to, club activities, center taskforces, orientation and ambassador committees, and various other academic venues.
- Participate in class discussions and fully prepare for all class assignments and meetings. Involvement is critical to the overall success of the Cox education.
- Be an active and contributing member of our Study Teams, as well as other teams and groups within the Cox School of Business. This includes sharing the responsibilities of team assignments and administrative obligations as well as leadership responsibility.
- Use our time at the Cox School as a springboard for developing our professional business networks. In addition, we introduce our contacts to other members of the Cox community and share job leads with fellow classmates and the Career Management Center.
- Ensure that we are dressed appropriately at all Cox events, including dressing appropriately for class, (i.e., business casual). To create the best impression with speakers, visiting companies, and recruiters, dress in business attire for Cox networking events.
- Conduct ourselves in a professional manner at all times by:
- Writing thank you notes to recruiters, mock interviewers, scholarship benefactors, speakers, etc.
- RSVPing to events and showing up.
- Keeping commitments and accepting accountability for our actions.
- Treating faculty and staff respectfully and appropriately.
- Arriving to class and events a few minutes early.
- And finally, we are part of the solution. If there is an issue of concern, we bring the issue and the potential solutions to the appropriate person or group (e.g., the Student Advisory Board (SAB), the faculty, the staff, etc.) We don’t just complain to our peers without taking action.!
In Summary…
Fostering a strong community is an integral part of the educational experience at the Cox School of Business. Faithful adherence to basic ethical norms such as truth, honesty, and integrity, and the highest standards of personal behavior are vital to a successful educational experience.
The Cox Charter of Community Conduct exists to reinforce these values and standards of conduct. All of the above statements stand in addition to the general Code of Conduct published by SMU and the Cox Honor Code.
