APPLYING for GRADUATION

Students must file an Application for Candidacy to Graduate with their school of record before their diploma will be issued. For questions regarding your degree program and graduation status, contact the Graduate Student Services Office.

SPECIAL NOTE: Candidates who owe money to the University may participate in the commencement ceremonies, but diplomas will be withheld until accounts are cleared. For questions regarding your account, contact the University Cashier by calling 214.768.3417.

PRESENTATION of DIPLOMAS

  • Ceremony begins promptly at 3:30 p.m.
  • Cox Candidates must be in line for procession on the basketball court on the main floor of Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports by 3:00 p.m.
  • Faculty marshals will be there to assist you.
  • Academic regalia will be worn by candidates during the ceremony.
  • Regalia are available for rental and pickup from the SMU Bookstore.
  • Please leave purses, coats and other personal belongings with one of your guests, as there will be nowhere to store these items during the ceremony. We can not secure anything left in the building.

Diplomas can be picked up in the Blanton Student Services if you do not attend the ceremony.  Any unclaimed diplomas after May 23rd will be mailed out by the University Registrar’s Office. Please check your address in Access.SMU.  If you have additional questions, contact Jackie Wilborn at 214.768.2048.

GUESTS

  • Seating is on a first come basis in Moody Coliseum.
  • Doors to the auditorium will be open 30 minutes prior to the ceremony.
  • Ushers will be available to assist guests who have disabilities with seating.


CONVOCATION

The commencement speaker will be Dr. Allen Weinstein, the noted historian who oversees the nation's presidential libraries.  Commencement convocation is a formal ceremony in which all schools participate. You have the option to attend. The Convocation begins at 9:30 a.m. in Moody Coliseum and lasts approximately an hour and a half. As a graduation candidate, you must have a ticket to participate in the Saturday morning Commencement Ceremony. Guests do not need tickets.

ACADEMIC REGALIA

  • Academic regalia will be worn by candidates during the ceremony. Reservations for regalia will be accepted from the SMU Bookstore beginning in May 3rd. You may also preorder your regalia by calling the SMU Bookstore at 214.768.2435.
  • Regalia price: Master's Gown, Cap, Tassel, Hood – $60.20.
  • All masters candidates will wear the hood for the degree they are about to receive.
  • Rented regalia must be returned to the SMU Bookstore by 11:00 p.m. on graduation day. The SMU Bookstore will offer Sunday and Monday as a grace period. Please note that a $10 late return fee will be applied on Tuesday morning. (Graduates get to keep their caps and tassels.).

ANNOUNCEMENTS/INVITATIONS

Personalized invitations and announcements may be ordered at the SMU Bookstore or directly from www.herffjones.com/college/graduation.

These announcements and invitations will contain the name and degree of the candidate and will list the ceremonies specific to that individual. A limited number of traditional (non-personalized) invitations will be on sale at the SMU Bookstore. For additional information, please call the SMU Bookstore at 214.768.2435.

PHOTOGRAPHS

Class photos for MSA graduates, Full-Time MBA graduates, and Professional MBA graduates are scheduled for 2:15 p.m. on May 17, 2008 on the steps of the Laura Lee Blanton Building. Please be prompt so that you will have time to get to Dedman Center to line up by 3:00 p.m. for your 3:30 p.m. ceremony.

While it is not appropriate for individuals to take photographs in the auditorium, arrangements have been made with a professional photographer to take candidates' photographs as they received their diplomas. Every graduate is photographed and mailed a proof after the ceremony. These photographs will be available to each family at a nominal cost. If you have questions concerning the photographs please call Flash Photography at 214.443.9393. Their office hours are Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
