Information about Mathematica


Q:I'd like to be able to make my Word document or Excel spreadsheet into a PDF for use on the web site.

A: There is a free plug-in called Primo PDF that will let you do this. 
 


Q: How can I have one of the following Adobe products installed on my machine - Writer/Distiller, Photoshop, Dreamweaver.

A: For departmental use send the request to support@cox.smu.edu with your funds & org number or       research account number.   For home use, go to Computer Corner (located in Huges-Trigg) with your SMU ID card. They have great discounts for faculty and staff.


Q:I need to get set up with an account to get data from the Wharton WRDS data site.

A: Go to http://wrds.wharton.upenn.edu and click "account request".


Q: How can I get SAS or SPSS installed on my PC?

A: We have a site license for SAS and SPSS. Go to http://www.smu.edu/its/acs/survey/ACS_SRequest.asp and fill out the application. Someone from ITS will come to install it on your machine.


Q: Where can I get SAS programming help?

A: Get in touch with Machiko Hollifield at 8-3850 or mhollifi@mail.cox.smu.edu . She is our resident SAS expert


 

Q: Where can I get SAS documentation?

Q:I don't want SAS installed on my PC.  Can I use it on a remote server?

A: Yes, you can use the ITS SAS servers, however they are Unix-based servers.
 


Q: How do I use SAS on Unix server?

A: SAS can be accessed on Titan, SMU's UNIX server used primarily for academic research. To establish a Titan account, call the HELP Desk at 214-768-4357.


Q: How do I  print the output from Titan?

A :  You can print your output to the printer in Crow copying room. At the command prompt, type the command:  lpr -Pcrohp8 filename

You can add a small shell script  to allow you to print without the command above.  Copy this and paste it into a file.

Q: I want to use Outlook at home.  How can I set up Outlook (not Outlook Express) on my home computer?

A:  Open OUTLOOK, Click Tools, E-mail Accounts...,Add new e-mail accounts, Exchange server.

Type exch4.cox.smu.edu in the server box, type your e-mail account name, (e.g. mhollifi) and click "check name".



                  How to download files from SMU ITS web site.

Faculty and staff can download useful software free from SMU ITS website.

1.        Go to http://www.smu.edu/help/download/ to find the list of software.
2.       Click the one you want to download.
3.       It will ask you your user id and password.
4.       Type your smu id and corresponding password as follows
           User Name: SMU
