ABSTRACT: This paper describes the results of over four years of research, development, implementation, and use of a system which will optimally merge microdata files. The merge process requires solving transportation problems with up to 50,000 constraints and 60 million variables, and is now being performed on a production basis. The resultant statistical data files fuel U. S. tax policy evaluation models which are used today for design and analysis of Federal legislation. Computational experience with this pioneering optimization software is described.

TITLE: Perceived environmental uncertainty: an individual or environmental attribute?
DATE_OF_PUBLICATION: 1979
NUMBER_OF_PAGES: 42
WORKING_PAPER_NUMBER: 79-0101
KEYWORDS: perceived environmental uncertainty (PEU), task-related perceptions, individual differences, organizational behavior
OTHER_PROVENANCES: Journal of Management, Fall81, Vol. 7 Issue 2, p27, 15p
ABSTRACT: Management students were subjected to a decision-making game and a personality inventory to assess the effects of uncertainty on their decision making. Results suggest that task-related measures of perceived environmental uncertainty minimize the impact of individual differences on such measures.

DATE_OF_PUBLICATION: 1979
NUMBER_OF_PAGES: 35

KEYWORDS: technology, description, models, workflow, job design, organization design
OTHER_PROVENANCES: ^^
ABSTRACT: This paper proposes a theoretical model of technology that consists of three elements: workflow predictability, task predictability and job interdependence. Various configurations of these three elements can be formed into "cells" that describe different technologies. The different modes of managerial control and self-regulation associated with each cell are discussed. The paper then combines the technology model with Hackman and Oldham's (1975) model of job redesign to form an integrated technology/job redesign model. Various relationships between technology and job characteristics are explored. A major conclusion develops from this discussion: in order to change the job characteristics that are associated with a target work system, the unavoidable introduction of uncertainty is necessary. The amount of self-regulation and the perceived degree of autonomy are shown to be critical variables that link technology and job redesign principles.

ABSTRACT: Using a simplistic categorization based on market share and market growth, companies are attracted to using the assessment to assign "mission" roles to individual business units. The categorization is show to be valuable in providing a common "language" for organizational planning, but considerable emphasis is placed on the need for flexibility in assessing the individual circumstances of each unit.

KEYWORDS: investment, option model, jump process, optimization, decision variables
OTHER_PROVENANCES: ^^
ABSTRACT: This paper presents the insight that R&R investments are "natural" options, and examines the extent to which they can be valued using currently available option pricing models. The nature of the industrial research effort determines whether the appropriate model is based on a diffusion process or a jump process. The option model based on the former is sufficiently developed to satisfactorily deal with the direct benefits of R&D, while the model base on the latter presents several problems. Furthermore, indirect benefits are not captured in these models. These applications and shortcomings are examined in detail in the hope of not only indicating a new direction for analysis of R&D investment decisions, but also pointing out the need for further scholarly research to deal more fully with this very interesting problem.

ABSTRACT: A "portfolio concept" may be used for strategic planning within large diversified firms. The portfolio concept relates product/market attractiveness to competitive position. Business units within the firm are analyzed for their ability to produce cash flow and improve competitive position. Balance should be achieved within the portfolio to insure that there is both a sustaining cash flow and effort to improve market position.

OTHER_PROVENANCES: ^^
ABSTRACT: Many urban policies and programs have been designed to combat neighborhood decline and abandonment, but few have enjoyed significant success. The thesis of this study is that this lack of success is attributable in part to the failure to develop an adequate theory of neighborhood decline. In fact, at least three competing theories exist- the orthodox economic, dual and radical theories. These theories are based on competing hypotheses and methodologies and imply different policy prescriptions.

ABSTRACT: The complex demography of households is modeled to ascertain what generalizable rules might be useful in making decisions about viable mortgage levels by lenders. Analysis lends credence to the rule-of-thumb, used prior to legislation in the mid- 1970's, that discounts the wife's income by 50 percent, for both single and two earner households. The complexity of the demography dictates individual analysis of each lending situation.

ABSTRACT: The amount of error is examined in using the four-fifths rule or the standard deviation to decide court cases which deal with discrimination. Since one, two or three standard deviations may be used as a criterion, it becomes apparent that it is possible for players in a court case to "game" the scenarios and use statistics to support their case. It is suggested that courts adopt a statistical standard in addition to the four-fifths rule in order to minimize the game playing.

ABSTRACT: During the last three decades the industrial sector of the United States economy has become increasingly concentrated in a relatively few, large, highly diversified firms. These firms rely primarily on internally generated funds for capital. Both the sources and uses of funds for these firms vary from smaller firms. This paper documents these trends. These trends suggest a need for a framework that combines our understanding of both markets and the internal organization of the firm to explain the resource allocation processes in the economy. This is a departure from the standard analysis which would lead one to believe that resource allocation in the industrial sector is primarily a market process. In other developed countries, the state is emerging as a major source of capital and this implies that the resource allocation framework should, in addition to the market and internal organizational influences consider the impact of political and ideological considerations.

ABSTRACT: Research in the area of capital market efficiency with respect to information generally considers only the two conclusions that the market is efficient or it is not efficient; information is either instantaneously reflected in prices or it is not. We investigate a market structure in which individual traders may require differential time lags to respond to new information, either because of time lags in acquiring the information or because of differences in ability to process received information quickly. In the context of this market, we argue that the dichotomous view of efficiency versus inefficiency is not useful; rather it is meaningful to measure the relative efficiency of the market. We develop a measure of relative market inefficiency and investigate properties of the measure. Then we consider economic determinants of the degree of market inefficiency and review our measure of efficiency against the criteria proposed by Goldman and Sosin (1979).

ABSTRACT:In recent years, new technologies have been developed that can be used to enhance the information environment in senior executive decision making. These technologies allow rapid information retrieval, rapid evaluation of new alternatives, graphic display of complex information, and participation by individuals at remote locations. The goal of the SMU Decision Room Project is to determine how to integrate the new information technologies into group decision making by senior executives. Two decision rooms with video, audio, and computer-generated information flowing between them are being built for use as an experimental facility. The rooms include seven-foot video displays, color graphics displays, and touch-screen terminals for individual use. A minicomputer controls the flow of information within and between rooms. The minicomputer provides data bases and models to aid decision makers and allow them to explore "what if" questions during meetings. An initial research program is described. This program focuses on specific decision making situations (including personnel decisions, strategic planning and crisis management, capital and financial planning, product marketing decisions, and evaluation of operations). The substantive experiments provide a context in which fundamental issues can be explored.

This study examines the possibility that the amount of information available about the company has an influence and that the period of listing may also be a factor. Results show that "turn of the year phenomenon" does not have an effect while period of listing does account for a great deal of the size differential, but not all of it. Other information elements remain to be fully studied.

TITLE: A little leadership, please?
DATE_OF_PUBLICATION: 1997
NUMBER_OF_PAGES: 20
WORKING_PAPER_NUMBER: 97-0201
KEYWORDS: transformational leadership, organizational behavior
OTHER_PROVENANCES: ^^
ABSTRACT: Critiquing the arrival of transformational leadership, the necessity of leadership at every organizational level is extolled. Four components of leadership are suggested, having a thorough knowledge of the job, say and do things consistent with company values and openness, foster listening to each other and to customers, and create opportunities for everyone to participate in making choices. Overall there is a need to little acts of leadership rather than expecting to make dramatic decisions or solve major problems with one blow.

TITLE: An analysis of the production line versus the case manager approach to information intensive services
DATE_OF_PUBLICATION: 1998
NUMBER_OF_PAGES: 35
WORKING_PAPER_NUMBER: 98-0301
KEYWORDS: customized services, cycle time, service operations, process choice, queuing theory, information systems, reengineering
OTHER_PROVENANCES: ^^
ABSTRACT: A side-by-side comparison using queuing theory is used to compare production line and case manager approaches to service industry. Analysis of the literature introduces the classification of work by its information intensity, customer contact intensity, and physical transformation intensity. Services with high information intensity work well with the case manager approach while services that require co-production by the customer may work with a case manager approach but are not likely to yield a major cost benefit.
