The merge process requires solving transportation problems with up to 50,000 constraints and 60 million variables, and is now being performed on a production basis. The resultant statistical data files fuel U. S. tax policy evaluation models which are used today for design and analysis of Federal legislation. Computational experience with this pioneering optimization software is described. AUTHORS: Lorenzi, Peter; Sims, Henry P. Jr.; Slocum, John W. DATE_OF_PUBLICATION: 1979 NUMBER_OF_PAGES: 35 WORKING_PAPER_NUMBER: 79-0103 KEYWORDS: technology, description, models, workflow, job design, organization design OTHER_PROVENANCES: ^^ ABSTRACT: This paper proposes a theoretical model of technology that consists of three elements: workflow predictability, task predictability and job interdependence. Various configurations of these three elements can be formed into "cells" that describe different technologies. The different modes of managerial control and self-regulation associated with each cell are discussed. The paper then combines the technology model with Hackman and Oldham's (1975) model of job redesign to form an integrated technology/job redesign model. Various relationships between technology and job characteristics are explored. A major conclusion develops from this discussion: in order to change the job characteristics that are associated with a target work system, the unavoidable introduction of uncertainty is necessary. The amount of self-regulation and the perceived degree of autonomy are shown to be critical variables that link technology and job redesign principles. AUTHORS: Bettis, Richard A.; Hall, William K. The nature of the industrial research effort determines whether the appropriate model is based on a diffusion process or a jump process. The option model based on the former is sufficiently developed to satisfactorily deal with the direct benefits of R&D, while the model base on the latter presents several problems. Furthermore, indirect benefits are not captured in these models. These applications and shortcomings are examined in detail in the hope of not only indicating a new direction for analysis of R&D investment decisions, but also pointing out the need for further scholarly research to deal more fully with this very interesting problem. These firms rely primarily on internally generated funds for capital. Both the sources and uses of funds for these firms vary from smaller firms. This paper documents these trends. These trends suggest a need for a framework that combines our understanding of both markets and the internal organization of the firm to explain the resource allocation processes in the economy. This is a departure from the standard analysis which would lead one to believe that resource allocation in the industrial sector is primarily a market process. In other developed countries, the state is emerging as a major source of capital and this implies that the resource allocation framework should, in addition to the market and internal organizational influences consider the impact of political and ideological considerations. We investigate a market structure in which individual traders may require differential time lags to respond to new information, either because of time lags in acquiring the information or because of differences in ability to process received information quickly. In the context of this market, we argue that the dichotomous view of efficiency versus inefficiency is not useful; rather it is meaningful to measure the relative efficiency of the market. We develop a measure of relative market inefficiency and investigate properties of the measure. Then we consider economic determinants of the degree of market inefficiency and review our measure of efficiency against the criteria proposed by Goldman and Sosin (1979). ABSTRACT:In recent years, new technologies have been developed that can be used to enhance the information environment in senior executive decision making. These technologies allow rapid information retrieval, rapid evaluation of new alternatives, graphic display of complex information, and participation by individuals at remote locations. The goal of the SMU Decision Room Project is to determine how to integrate the new information technologies into group decision making by senior executives. Two decision rooms with video, audio, and computer-generated information flowing between them are being built for use as an experimental facility. The rooms include seven-foot video displays, color graphics displays, and touch-screen terminals for individual use. A minicomputer controls the flow of information within and between rooms. The minicomputer provides data bases and models to aid decision makers and allow them to explore "what if" questions during meetings. An initial research program is described. This program focuses on specific decision making situations (including personnel decisions, strategic planning and crisis management, capital and financial planning, product marketing decisions, and evaluation of operations). The substantive experiments provide a context in which fundamental issues can be explored.
