The subject of ethics is an interesting and complex study because there are ethics and standards that apply broadly to business in general and then there are unique ethical situations tied to specific occupations and professions. This guide approaches ethics from the broadest possible view.

ETHICS CODES & STATEMENTS

The Blackwell encyclopedic dictionary of business ethics This ebook dictionary contains articles that discuss ethical concepts, including the research and published sources that support the discussion.

Creating a Code of Ethics Assembled by Chris MacDonald, this site contains instructions, sample ethics codes, publications, speeches and essays about ethics codes.

Electronic Industry Code of Conduct  This code delineates responsibilities to workers and to the environment. It was initially subscribed to by Celestica, Cisco, Dell, Flextronics, Foxconn, HP, IBM, Intel, Jabil, Lucent, Microsoft, Sanmina SCI, Seagate, and Sony.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

EnviroLinkEnviroweb, a nonprofit organization which was started by a university freshman, sponsors this site which contains news items and a very large collection of usefully categorized web links about environmental matters including "Sustainability" and "Environmental Legislation and Policy".

Environment and the OECD Guidelines for International Enterprises  This booklet describes the OECDs notion of best practices for corporations.

INTERNATIONAL ISSUES

BUBL - Business Ethics BUBL is a current awareness project based at the Centre for Digital Library Research, Strathclyde University, United Kingdom. The Business Ethics section contains web links to ethics sites that may be useful in starting a search for ethics information.

Business and Human Rights: a resource website The Resource Centre is allied with Amnesty International and eminent international academic institutions. Resources include reports of corporate misconduct and examples of best practice.

Ethicsweb This website is owned by Chris MacDonald, an ethicist, and contains links to a great many international materials. Go here as a starting point to find ethics materials.

European Business Ethics Network(EBEN) The Network is linked here because the main EBEN site has recently been restructured. Publications on the website are open to SMU students through its Blackwell partnership. Simply open the publication to access full text.

Global Compact The Compact is a network of business organizations that work with six United Nations agencies to address issues dealing with human rights, labour, the environment and corruption. Students will find the 10 guiding principles a useful outline for discussions. The web site also provides the text of speeches and papers on numerous topics.

Institute for Global Ethics The Institute is a nonprofit organization headed and advised by an eminent international board and advisor council with representatives from business, education, and the press. Services include seminars for individuals and consulting to firms and organizations. Ethics Newsline, an online newsletter, may be helpful to students.

The OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises The Guidelines specify proper conduct in principal areas including employment, environment, bribery, consumer interests and competition.

Transparency International - Corruption Perception Index  Data and ethics tools are provided to support the international fight against corruption, including the Corruption Perception Index.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

2007 World's Most Ethical Companies  This ranking comes from Ethisphere Magazine which is governed by the Ethisphere Council, composed of corporate professionals that is supported by corporations, PLI, LexisNexis and Corpedia.

Business for Social Responsibility  BSR is an international membership organization where member businesses may obtain assistance establishing best practices. The website contains CSR Resources (corporate social responsibility) which are freely available briefs on CSR topics as well as a number of publications for purchase.

Banneker Center on Corporate Welfare This anonymously authored website provides watchdog information on corporate activities.

Better Business Bureau The BBB is a corporately supported organization that provides resources for redress of consumer issues.

Center for Ethics and Business The Center is a function of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Its mission is to provide tools and forums for rationalizing ethical issues across cultural divides.

CorpWatch This San Francisco-based project keeps a close eye on corporations that cast ethical considerations aside in pursuit of a fast buck.

NET Impact (Students for Responsible Business) Net Impact is an organization of MBAs and students devoted to making a positive impact on the world through business operations.

ORGANIZATIONAL PROGRAMS

Ethics Resource Center (provided by Ethics Today newsletter) The Resource Center provides tools and resources to assist businesses in conducting an ethics program.

Online Ethics Center  This ethics resource from Case Western Reserve University focuses on the ethical dilemmas of engineers and technical personnel in a business setting. Useful articles and scenarios are provided.

Institute for Business, Technology & Ethics (IBTE)  IBTE produces videos for ethics coaching in organizations. It also producs a bi-monthly magazine, Ethix, and the archived issues are available on the website.

Society for Business Ethics (SBE)  The SBE is a nonprofit, scholarly organization devoted to the study of business ethics. The website contains a directory of ethics specialists.

Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics  The Society is developing certification for compliance and ethics professionals. The website contains back issues of their eNewsletter and the store sells videos, manuals, and training kits.

ETHICS IN GOVERNMENT

Financial Scandals   This is a guide to web resources that report on scandals and crimes

U. S. Office on Government Ethics (OGE)  The OGE is the Executive Branch ethics office. Publications and Advisor Opinions provide a useful insight into the ethical standards for government employees.

CATO Handbook for Congress - Corporate Welfare  The CATO Institute provides a strong counterpoint discussion of the ills that arise from an incestuous relationship between government and business.

Common Cause - Corporate Welfare  This is a nonprofit nonpartisan watchdog organization that tracks ethical issues in the political and other arenas.

Nader.org  Significant opinions that address industry/government conflicts of interest and an archive of previous items is available for those seeking perspective on current events.

Center for Ethics, Capital Markets and Political Economy  The Center is devoted to making connections between "morals" and real world economics.

Harvard Business Review - access via Business Source Complete  Best practices and advanced thinking from an authoritative source are outlined in factuall and researched articles.

Journal of Business Ethics - access via Business Source Complete Original articles and reviews covering a broad range of business issues.

Philosopher's index [database]  This database contains only abstracts with links that indicate items that may be available in print from the library. Articles are included from as far back as 1940, providing unique historical coverage of ethics issues.
