POLICIES


 

AUTHORIZED CONDUCT & ACCESS

The BIC is a restricted access facility, available only to current students, faculty, staff, and alumni of SMU. To obtain access to BIC resources, patrons must present a valid SMU ID, for verification of status when entering the facility.

Cox alumni may obtain access to most library resources when visiting the BIC in person. Off-campus access to electronic resources is NOT available to alumni. A picture ID is required to verify alumni status and to request a Cox Alumni library card, which is valid only in the BIC.

Alumni from other SMU schools and colleges and Cox alumni wishing to use the SMU Central Libraries resources should consult the SMU Central University Libraries circulation information page to determine lending policies by library.

FOOD, DRINK and TOBACCO

Food and tobacco use are prohibited in the Business Information Center. Drinks in travel mugs and screw-top or resealable bottles are permitted. We appreciate continued cooperation in disposing of trash properly, reporting any spills immediately, using only appropriate containers, keeping the lids sealed when not drinking, and everyone's help in keeping the BIC clean.

SOFTWARE AVAILABLE ON LAB COMPUTERS

Many software packages are available to you. Be aware that software loads are often changed to meet the needs of classes offered for the current semester. Please refer to our facilities page for additional information.

PODCASTING STUDIO
The Studio may be reserved in advance, in person, at the BIC front desk. Time is allocated in 2 hour blocks. Only one block may be reserved advance. If the schedule permits, a user may renew their time for additional blocks. The digital camera may be reserved and checked out seperately from the room.

GROUP PRESENTATION ROOM
The Room may be reserved in advance, in person, at the BIC front desk. Time is allocated in 2 hour blocks. Only one block may be reserved in advance. If the schedule permits, a group may renew their time for additional blocks. A group is defined as at least two people. The room is not released until at least two people are present in person.

COURSE RESERVE

Books, reports, and other printed materials are on the reserve shelf in the BIC and may be located by consulting the Library Catalog . Electronic materials may be placed on reserve through Fondren Library and are displayed on the Library Catalog system.

WEBLINKS ON THE BIC WEBSITE

Links within the BIC website are selected to maximize usefulness to students and faculty. Suggestion for new links are always welcome provided they fit the selection criteria. Links deep into many sites are not possible due to technical restrictions.

COPYING AND PRINTING

Purchasing copies, prints, or storage media requires electronic payment. Copy cards may be purchased within the Center or value may be added to the magnetic stripe on student ID cards through Pony Express. Copy cards may only be used to pay for copying and printing.  The PONY stripe on ID cards may be used for a variety purposes - printing, copying, food service and other purchases.

Patrons must comply with copyright, patent, and licensing limitations.

  • Software installed in lab computers may not be copied.
  • Materials from the Web may not be copied beyond the limits of fair use.
  • Materials in BIC print collections may not be copied beyond the limits of fair use.

    Fair use applies in an educational setting. Students and faculty may use copyrighted materials under stringent limitations, primarily for classroom and class-related purposes. Please use the links listed below or ask a BIC Librarian for more detailed information.

Students, please consult with a staff member or your instructor before undertaking extensive photocopying.
