BUSINESS INFORMATION CENTER

POLICIES
AUTHORIZED CONDUCT & ACCESS
The BIC is a restricted access facility, available only to current students, faculty, staff, and alumni of SMU. To obtain access to BIC resources, patrons must present a valid SMU ID, for verification of status when entering the facility.
Cox alumni may obtain access to most library resources when visiting the BIC in person. Off-campus access to electronic resources is NOT available to alumni. A picture ID is required to verify alumni status and to request a Cox Alumni library card, which is valid only in the BIC.
Alumni from other SMU schools and colleges and Cox alumni wishing to use the SMU Central Libraries resources should consult the SMU Central University Libraries circulation information page to determine lending policies by library.
FOOD, DRINK and TOBACCO
Food and tobacco use are prohibited in the Business Information Center. Drinks are permitted in most types of closed container. Open cups, drinks in cans and alcoholic beverages are not permitted. Users must report any spills immediately to BIC staff.
SOFTWARE AVAILABLE ON LAB COMPUTERS
Many software packages are available to you. Be aware that software loads are often changed to meet the needs of classes offered for the current semester. Please refer to our facilities page for additional information.
PODCASTING STUDIO / GROUP PRESENTATION ROOM
These dedicated-use rooms may be reserved only by current students, faculty, and staff up to two weeks in advance, in person, at the BIC front desk or by calling 214-768-4107. Time is allocated in 2 hour blocks. Only one block may be reserved per group in advance. If the schedule permits, a group may renew their time for additional blocks. A group is defined as at least two people. The room is not checked out until at least two group members are present.
A current student, faculty, or staff SMU ID is required to check out the Podcasting Studio or Group Presentation Room. The user presenting his/her SMU ID must review all room usage policies and assumes full financial responsibility for all late return fines, room's good condition, and any lost or damaged equipment replacement charges. Upon each check out, the borrower's signature is required to verify his/her understanding of all usage terms and associated financial obligations.
Usage of each rooms' technology for preparing academic assignments is required; room usage for study is not permitted. Please report any problems or ask BIC staff for assistance in operating equipment, as needed.
iPOD KIT / VIDEO CAMERA KIT
An iPod Kit or the Video Camera Kit may be reserved up to two weeks in advance, in person, at the BIC front desk or by calling 214-768-4107. Only one time block may be reserved per group in advance. If the schedule permits, the user may renew their time for one additional time block. Currently, the time block period for equipment check out is two days; that is subject to change without notice. Time blocks are allocated in consultation with faculty assigning course projects requiring access to these resources.
A current SMU ID is required for check out of the iPod Kit or Video Camera Kit equipment. The SMU ID user assumes full financial responsibility for all late return fines and any lost or damaged equipment replacement charges. Upon each check out, the borrower's signature is required to verify understanding all usage terms and financial obligations involved with the equipment loan. Please allow time for staff to review all loan policies, verify contents loaned, obtain user's signature and current SMU ID, and re-verify kit contents upon its return to the BIC.
A "Sony for HandyCam DVD-RW disc" is always required to operate the BIC's video camera. User must provide own recording media for the video camera.
Always ask BIC staff for assistance or review user manuals (available with each kit) before operating any equipment. User will be held liable for any damages or missing equipment.
COURSE RESERVE
Faculty place items on reserve in several different ways. Electronic materials may be placed on reserve through Fondren Library and are displayed on the PONI library catalog system. Books, reports, and other printed materials are on the reserve shelf in the BIC and may be located by consulting the PONI Catalog. Faculty may also attach course materials to their individual faculty/course web pages on the Cox website.
WEBLINKS ON THE BIC WEBSITE
Links within the BIC website are selected by professional librarians to maximize usefulness to students and faculty. Suggestions for new links are always welcome provided they fit the selection criteria. Links deep into many sites are not possible due to technical restrictions.
