Stephen Haines, Class of 2008 Posted March 5, 2007
I finished taking my last final on March 1, and I was ready to be done after finals week. Business school is a little fickle because most of my classmates are very relaxed and exuberant until finals week when we all go without sleep to cram four tests into three days! Sound like fun? Can't wait to sign up? Welcome to business school....the best time of your life when it isn't finals week!
The end of finals marks the start of Spring Break. I have done the Cabo San Lucas and Telluride (CO) trips this year, so I am taking this opportunity to relax for a week. Five friends from the MBA program are heading down to Austin for the South by Southwest Music festival. I have never been to SXSW, but I hear the live music scene is one of the best in the country. During the day, one of my classmates has a house on Lake Travis (outside Austin) so we'll stay there and water ski. Hopefully I'll get a little sun and come back ready to hit the books for a new spring quarter.
That last quarter of school will be a little easier now that I have my summer internship secured. I signed with JP Morgan's summer associate program in New York City! The company flew summer associate candidates to Manhattan in February to meet division executives and experience the company culture. The visit included an art gallery tour, dinner at the 21 Club and a reception with the CIO. Everything about the city, people and associate program impressed me enough to be really excited about this summer!
A few random thoughts from my NYC trip: -- I called my airline the day before I left for NY to confirm my flight information. A computer generated voice asked me to enter my frequent flier number "one digit at a time." I really wanted to ask if there were other ways to enter a long number! -- I hadn't been in New York for three hours before I experienced a unique Big Apple moment. During my walk down Park Avenue, I got hit in the back by a mail courier on a bicycle. No kidding, I got hit by a ten-speed. The bike courier kept going, and another MBA candidate joked I was involved in New York's first hit and ride. To all our New York City applicants - I didn't get a plate number, but I'll be watching this summer for a red Huffy. -- When I got back to Texas from Manhattan, I found out a young and attractive women had moved into my building. When I talked to the women who lives two doors down from me, she said she hated our new neighbor because "she is so cute and thin." Could you imagine some guy saying he hates his new neighbor because "his hair is so perfect?' It wouldn't happen, but you'll learn to love the drama that is everything Dallas!
