How is the curriculum structured over the two years of the MBA program?
Each semester (term) is split into two, 8-week modules during which students take a variety of courses. All classes during the first semester are core business classes, including Accounting, Economics, Statistics, Finance, Decision Analysis and Marketing. Additionally, students take courses in career management and business presentation skills.

During the second semester, students complete required courses in Operations Management, Organizational Behavior and Strategic Management as well as the Global Leadership program. Students have the opportunity to begin taking elective courses at this time. Both semesters of the second year are filled with elective courses of a student’s choice, designed toward meeting the requirements of their chosen concentration(s).

When do I register for classes?
Because all classes in the first semester are required core courses, no preregistration is required. Students will receive information on their assigned class days/times just prior to Orientation. For all subsequent semesters, students will register well in advance of the start of classes for each term.

How do I choose a concentration? Can I choose more than one?
All students are automatically enrolled with a basic concentration of General Business. If a student wants to focus on a specific area of business, they will be given an opportunity to declare up to 2 concentrations during their time in the program.  Information on the timing of declaring a concentration is sent to students during their first semester.

Would I have the opportunity to study abroad?

Do you accept transfer credits from other programs?
In general, the Cox School will consider up to 8 credit hours of transferable graduate-level coursework completed at an AACSB accredited business school which have not been applied to another degree earned. Specific requirements and instructions on how to petition for transfer are available upon request to admitted students. Only students who submit a deposit to attend the program can begin the process for possible course transfer.

Do you have a laptop computer requirement?
All MBA students are required to have access to a laptop computer during their time in the program. Students can choose to use an existing laptop as long as it meets the minimum standards of the school (this information is sent to admitted students prior to Orientation). Students without a laptop can purchase one at a discount through SMU or purchase one on their own which meets the minimum standards.

What assistance do students receive with their internship/job searches?
All students have a great resource in the Career Management Center (CMC) which provides a variety of services for the Cox graduate students. Your interaction with the CMC starts during the summer prior to the start of the program, as you complete self-assessments and update your resume. During your first semester, your Managing Your Career class helps you focus on the internship/job search part of the MBA program. From that point on, CMC staff members are available to meet with you as you move forward with your personal plan.
