If I am admitted, can I defer my enrollment until next year?
In general, the Admissions Committee will grant a one-year deferral only for extenuating circumstances. Deferrals are handled on a case by case basis. If you would like to request a deferral, please send the request in writing to a member of the Admissions Committee.

When do classes start?
Students start classes at the end of August each year. In addition, students are required to attend a MANDATORY orientation that begins around the middle of August. International students need to plan to be in the United States no later than August 1.

Will I have any prep work to do prior to starting the program?
All incoming students will have prep work in accounting, finance and statistics, culminating in online exams in each subject. In addition, all incoming students will have some pre-orientation assessments to complete for the Career Management Center, along with submission of a basic cover letter and resume. These items typically must be completed by July 31.
We also offer a boot camp for students who could benefit from a quantitative refresher before classes begin. Boot camp is an invitation-only event. All entering students are invited to attend a finance workshop the week prior to orientation; details would be sent in late spring.
In addition, the Admissions Committee may require some students to enroll in specific college-level business courses and complete them with a grade of a B or better. These courses must be completed before orientation and can be taken at any local college. Students asked to take such courses can request course descriptions from the Admissions Committee.

Is there an orientation for new students?
All incoming students must attend a week-long orientation program. This takes place the week prior to the start of classes (typically the third week of August).
All international students will have an additional set of orientation sessions which take place the week prior to the all-class orientation.

How will information be communicated to me prior to starting the program?
Starting in February and continuing to the start of orientation, the MBA Admissions team sends an e-mail update to all admitted students every 2 weeks. If information needs to be sent between scheduled updates, an e-mail will be sent. Additional information is posted on the new students’ section of the Cox MBA website and on the Facebook group created for new students. In June, the MBA Student Services and Career Management Center offices send a pre-orientation packet via postal mail. The Admissions team is always accessible via phone and e-mail for individual questions.

I am a waitlisted candidate; what can I do to increase the likelihood of admission?
The Admissions Committee will take into consideration any materials that “improve” an applicant’s overall application. Examples of these items would be an improved GMAT score or an updated resume with a promotion/title change. In general, these are the only items that the Committee will review when reconsidering the application at a later date. There is no deadline by when a waitlisted candidate would receive a final admissions decision.

The Cox Admissions staff will provide feedback in the summer following an application cycle. If you would like to receive formal feedback on your application, please submit a request to mbainfo@cox.smu.edu after August 1.

When do international students start the process to receive a student visa? How long does the process take?
All forms required for the visa process are sent to international students along with their offer of admission. Once all required documents and a deposit is received, the Admissions office will submit the required items to the International Office for them to issue the I-20. The SMU International Office will issue an I-20, which is sent via express mail to the student’s home address. The student then makes arrangements for an interview to receive a student visa.
The Admissions team processes all paperwork as quickly and efficiently as possible. To ensure enough time to complete the process successfully so you can be in the US by August 1 (as required), all international students are encourage to apply by the Round 2 deadline (January 6).
