SMU Cox Faculty Experts: Organization/Strategy


• David Croson is an Associate Professor in the Strategy and Entrepreneurship Department at SMU Cox School of Business. He can provide practical approaches to risky decisions, supplier and customer incentives, and creative ways to turn business weaknesses into assets. He frequently advises technology startups and was named "Mentor of the Year" by the University City Science Center. • David Lei is associate professor in the management and organizations department. He specializes in business strategy, corporate strategy, manufacturing technology, strategic management, technology investments, technology, and innovation management. He can also discuss business labor in China, and how generational issues will cause significant social security problems due to declining numbers of workers. • John Slocum, holds the title of O.Paul Corley Professor of Organizational Behavior and is chairs the Organization and Management Department. He specializes in corporate management, business trends, leadership, and human resources management. His recent research includes examining the common behaviors of failed CEOs, as well as the corporate culture factors of mergers and acquisitions. He is a frequent media commentator on topics concerning corporate organization during mergers, and CEO leadership successes and failings. He also consults with such organizations as Mellon National Bank, ARAMARK, The Associates, Kodak, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Hershey Foods, Celanese, General Telephone and Electric, NASA, Lockheed Martin Corporation, Transnational Trucks, and Brooklyn Union. • Gordon Walker is chair of Strategy and Entrepreneurship Department. He specializes in strategic planning, corporate and business strategy, institutional economics, and organization theory. Professor Walker recently authored Modern Competitive Strategy. He has worked as a consultant with several corporations including Sprint, Electronic Data Systems, Xerox, General Motors, Johnson and Johnson, and Texas Industries. Walker can also speak to the roles and responsibilities of Boards, as he himself sits on the Board of Directors of a prominent NASDAQ-listed company, and also chairs that company’s Nominating and Governance Committee. • Ray Miles is adjunct professor of strategy and president of Rajko Associates, a global advisory firm for international business and politics. In EDS he was president of a $1B+ unit, and led a $300M alliance with Cisco. In TI he was a business manager, and led the alliance with Deutsche Telekom and Sun. In Europe he helped set up BT's JVs with Berlusconi’s Fininvest, and led early offshore outsourcing. He co-founded Kibernetika and grew it to 60% national market share and export expansion to Russia and Asia. His business dealings with, and travel to, China, Indian subcontinent, and Russia date from early 1980's. He was also a principal advisor to Tito’s military. Dr. Miles board service record includes a number of for-profit, public and closely held, and non-profit boards. A frequent keynote speaker at various fora at home and abroad, he frequently publishes his views in major business media. His famed business network Rolodex grew through living in 6, and doing business in 30+ countries across several industries. An SMU alumnus and longtime mentor, and a former Lt.
