EXECUTIVE EDUCATION

Executive Education’s Role in the “R Word and the Oil Markets”
While the Bulls and Bears debate the future of oil prices, Cox Executive Education is focused on other key issues that will impact energy companies in the near future, such as:
- The availability of competent human resources to lead and manage energy companies in the coming years. With 40-60% of the workforce eligible for retirement in the next 5-7 years, companies face a talent management issue that is unprecedented in the industry.
- Risk management in an industry that deals with unique levels of political, economic/financial, and geologic risk. The industry faces volatility in all three of those areas — whether it’s a pipeline fire or a dictator’s latest stunt.
Cox Executive Education, in association with the Maguire Energy Institute, is helping the industry meet the challenges of price volatility, availability of management talent, and risk management. Open enrollment courses for energy professionals prepare participants to understand the language of management and finance, thereby augmenting their technical expertise. Mergers and acquisitions, succession planning, building shareholder value, and managing risk in a global industry are just some of the areas covered. Additionally, Executive Education is working with a growing number of companies to develop custom programs for high potential employees who will take on even more significant roles within their organizations. On the economic front, Cox Executive Education will host a two-day event in June for Institutional Investors, in part to educate them about the sector and to provide them with a real-time perspective from industry experts on all of the Bull and Bear issues.
By leveraging the resources of SMU COX, Executive Education will play an ever expanding role in the education of energy professionals worldwide by providing real solutions to real business problems.
