BUSINESS INFORMATION CENTER

Our mission is to provide the SMU community with business information regardless of format, support the integration of information and technology into the curriculum and act as a center for research and development for state-of-the-art information technology applications in the business education field.
- The Center makes available browsing collections, study seating, and access to computers on a generous schedule to accommodate student needs.
- Each student must present a valid SMU ID to the front desk attendant in order to have a computer station assigned, to reserve a group study room, to check out items or to use reserve materials.
- Please direct requests and questions to a BIC staff member for speedy service.
Services and resources available
- Ask-a-Librarian service for requesting information or assistance via email or phone.
- Detailed training sessions that provide the tools to conduct successful research on companies, industries, markets, financial information, international business, job searching, and on the use of specific resources including Bloomberg. Follow the "Workshops" link to read descriptions and sign up for sessions.
- Email alerts with tips on using the databases effectively to perform research and reminders of training opportunities.
- Individual reference appointments with a librarian for assisting students with information / research needs.
- Course Reserve materials including books, reports and other physical items are processed for faculty and kept at the front desk for student access.
- Classroom Instruction and Topical Guides, constructed in cooperation with faculty, are provided to orient students to course-related databases and to guide successful research for specific assignments.
- Tours of the Center for groups and individuals.
Facility Resources
- Quiet reading room and periodicals area with lounge seating
- Two group study rooms, one set up for presentation preparation and practice
- Over 70 computer workstations for research and assignment preparation.
- Wireless and wired laptop access provided within the center.
- Two printers , a color laser printer, a scanner and two photocopiers - Pony account needed
- Office supplies such as a three-hole punch, stapler, and paper cutter.
Electronic Resources
- Access to over 150 electronic resources.
- Research Guides for selected business topics and databases.
- Limited access resources provided exclusively for Cox Business School students on a small number of stations within the Center including BARRA, Bloomberg, DataStream, and WONDA.
Print Resources
- The Hillcrest Foundation International Resource Library, the Edwin L. Cox Business Leadership Center Resource Collection, the Cary M. Maguire Energy Institute Resource Collection, the MBA Career management Center Library and the MBA Career Center Collection.
- Core collection of reference titles including materials by Dun & Bradstreet, the Statistical Abstract of the U.S. and Value Line.
- Subscriptions to 50 key business and trade journals.
- Dallas Morning News, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily and Wall Street Journal.
Web Site Highlights
- The Business Information Center Web Page (http://bic.cox.smu.edu/) includes links on the left to frequently accessed items such as business databases, workshop sign-up and Ask-a-Librarian.
- Research Guides are updated annotated lists of BIC, SMU, and freely available resources on business topics including international business, demographics, and careers.
- Click on the "Students link featured on the homepage to find pertinent information such as writing help for papers, policies for the BIC, and a link to faculty member web pages.
