Kumar Venkataraman is the Fabacher Endowed Professor of Alternative Asset Management and Associate Professor in Finance at the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University, where he joined the faculty in 2000. He received his Ph.D. degree in Finance from Arizona State University and his undergraduate degree from BITS-Pilani, in India. He has been a member of the Cox finance faculty since 2000. He serves as a visiting economist at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

Research: Dr. Venkataraman's research interests lie primarily in the area of market microstructure. He has examined issues related to financial market design, measurement of trading cost, evaluation of trading strategies, performance measurement of trading desks and the impact of regulatory reform. His research has been published in premier finance and accounting journals including the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics and Review of Financial Studies.

His research has influenced important policy debates on the structure of financial markets, and has been cited by regulators in United States and Europe. His work has been featured in industry publications, such as The CFA Digest, in several text books, and in business press, including Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Economist and Bloomberg News. He has presented his work at universities, leading academic conferences and regulatory bodies including the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and the New York Stock Exchange.

Teaching: Dr. Venkataraman's teaching interests lie primarily in the area of investments. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in financial management, international finance, portfolio theory and asset pricing models, alternative assets, and hedge funds, and taught customized modules in the Executive Education programs.

Awards and Honors: He is recipient of the Gerald J. Ford Senior Research Fellowship (highest University research award) in 2008 and the Research Excellence Award for the Cox School in 2004. He has received the Outstanding Teaching Award in the Cox MBA program and was twice nominated for the University-wide Faculty Teaching Award. He serves as an Associate Editor of Financial Management and is an invited member of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) Working Group on Market Microstructure.

Personal: Married to Kalyani, and has two children, Anushka and Sanjana. In his spare time, Kumar enjoys watching and playing tennis.
