This course is designed to complement the entrepreneurship classes by examining the issues associated with venture capital from the viewpoint of the venture capitalist. This course focuses on the strategic and organizational issues associated with the firms that provide private equity to entrepreneurial firms. It examines the process by which private equity firms raise money from their investors, including a discussion of the associated agency problems. It examines the private equity firm’s decision to invest in a new venture. This includes a discussion of how to evaluate the strategy of the new venture and its likelihood for success or failure. The course examines the process by which the private equity firm exits from its investments and examines how nonfinancial corporations can use a private-equity model to finance new business ventures.
