In this course, students will learn to recognize and manage many of the significant and recurring legal issues that arise in the workplace. The professor will take a practical approach: the aim is to equip managers to effectively handle employment related issues that inevitably arise wherever there are employers and employees. The class will delve into relevant current events. Issues covered will include, but are not limited to, protecting intellectual property in a competitive environment, strategic principles for designing, drafting, negotiating and administering employment contracts including non-compete and confidentiality agreements, recent developments in discrimination and sexual harassment, and the competing interests of the employee’s right to privacy and the employer’s right to know e.g., the content of an employee’s e-mail messages or what Internet sites he visits. The format of the class will be a combination of lecture, class discussion, and case study.
