SMU Football Player Tackles the Business World

SMU football star Andrew Galloway (BBA '08) gives his all on and off the field. In addition to being a dedicated athlete, Galloway is a committed student, graduating at the top of his high school class in Manhattan, Kansas. His strong work ethic has carried over into his college career at SMU Cox, where he is a distinguished BBA Scholar and on the university's Honor Roll. He also completed internships with Southwest Airlines and Adidas this summer.

Galloway decided to major in marketing because of the pride and tradition associated with SMU and the great opportunities a Cox School education presents.

"The prestige and the dedication to creating a welcoming environment for all students were simply amazing as well," he said.

Galloway was impressed with Cox BBA Admissions counselors and anticipated the same level of dedication and excitement in his professors. He has not been disappointed.

"The courses and faculty at the Cox School of Business are absolutely tops in the country. All of my business courses have been outstanding," he said. "The faculty pushes you to do your best and helps you achieve your personal goals for success."

Galloway was especially impressed with Barbara Kincaid, senior lecturer in business law.

"She has dedicated her heart and soul to teaching students about business law while instilling in them the importance of SMU tradition and pride.

Even with a challenging class schedule and football practices, Galloway always sought additional ways to succeed at SMU. In 2006 he won SMU's "Big Shot" marketing competition, beating out 12 other candidates.  During this competition, Galloway put the skills he learned at Cox to work, thinking creatively "on his feet" to come up with various promotions during timeouts of the Mustang basketball games. In the final competition, Galloway and the other finalist came up with their own marketing plans. Galloway's "Rock the Red" wowed judges and he won the competition, earning himself the title of 2006 "Big Shot."

Always up for a challenge, over the summer Galloway pursued two internships, serving as a marketing field intern for Southwest Airlines and a marketing associate intern with Adidas.

At Southwest Airlines, Galloway researched corporate sales leads, helped coordinate events including Employee Appreciation Days and worked side-by-side with seasoned Southwest Airlines marketing professionals. For Galloway, the culture of Southwest Airlines exceeded expectations.

"Southwest Airlines has a great advantage in that its employees have such a personal interest in the company.  Everyone comes to work with a smile on their face and everyone truly lives and dies with the successes or failures of the company. The working environment and company culture are unlike any other," he said.

Galloway's internship with Adidas allowed him to combine his love of sports with business. He felt right at home working with world-class athletes who are passionate about the technology behind the Adidas products. He has enjoyed extensive training in shoe technology and running mechanics, traveling to sporting good stores to train employees about Adidas products, and providing sales support and marketing research.

Galloway credits early involvement in a variety of activities at SMU as a key in his success. As a BBA Scholar, football star, college "Big Shot," SMU Emerging Leader, and a student trustee on the SMU Board of Trustees, he has learned to perfect the art of multi-tasking. He is looking forward to his senior year at SMU and hopes to find a job after graduation that will push and challenge him. Galloway says the Cox experience places students ahead of the curve and he feels confident about his future.
