SMU Cox Director of Diversity Invited to Serve U.S. Department of Labor Steve Denson Joins Native American Employment and Training Council
Dallas (SMU) – SMU Cox School of Business is pleased to announce Steve Denson, director of diversity and adjunct professor, will serve a two-year appointment on the U.S. Department of Labor’s (Department) Native American Employment and Training Council (Council).
The Council is an advisory committee to the Secretary of Labor. It has approximately 21 members, each appointed for a term designated by the Secretary. The Council was established by the Workforce Investment Act of 1998. It provides advice on the overall operation and administration of Native American employment and training programs.
“The Department believes Mr. Denson’s service will be highly beneficial to the work of the Council,” said Elaine L. Chao, Secretary of Labor. “We look forward to his participation on the Council and his leadership in matters affecting the employment and training of Indians and Native Americans.”
Steve Denson, a member of the Chickasaw Nation, has been instrumental in establishing recruiting programs designed specifically to attract Native Americans. He was named Native American of the Year for 2004 by the American Indian Chamber of Commerce, and has received international awareness for his outreach. In addition, he serves as Trustee of the American Indian College Fund.
“The WIA is an integral part of building and keeping a strong economy. The programs train thousands of young people each year in preparation to enter the U.S. workforce,” said Denson. “I look forward to working with the Secretary and other members of the advisory group and I am very honored to accept this appointment.”
