SMU Cox Ernst & Young Management Briefing Series Welcomes Dallas Cowboys Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President Stephen Jones
Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President of the Dallas Cowboys, Stephen Jones, will speak to the SMU and Dallas communities as part of the SMU Cox Ernst & Young Management Briefing Series on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at the Hilton Anatole Hotel.
With 19 years of Cowboys history, Jones played an instrumental role in creating “Americas Team,” helping to orchestrate many trades, including a key role in bringing Terrell Owens to Dallas in 2006. In addition, Jones is spearheading the club’s new stadium efforts, overseeing the in-house development team while working directly with local government, community and business leaders. He was directly responsible for the club’s successful referendum campaign in the fall of 2004 that saw the City of Arlington agree to join forces with the Cowboys in building a new state-of-the-art stadium that will open at the start of the 2009 season.
The new Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington will serve as a beacon to help North Texas stake its claim as a major sporting and entertainment destination. With the completion of the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, North Texas will play host to not only the SuperBowl in 2011 but also the annual Texas A&M/Arkansas game that will begin in 2009. The SuperBowl and other events to be held at the stadium will bring thousands of fans, and dollars to the North Texas economy. The state-of-the-art home of the Cowboys will serve as a powerful catalyst to attract a wide range of national and international events that will help define the future of the region for generations to come.
Currently, Jones’ stadium management duties are centered on every aspect of the new stadium, and his stewardship of Texas Stadium will draw to a close following the Cowboys 2009 season. His efforts with historic Texas Stadium will leave behind a legacy of facility management that maximized the use and visibility of the venue into a year-round destination for sporting, entertainment, community and corporate events on an unprecedented level. His vast experience in stadium management, design and development has landed him a standing appointment on the NFL’s New Stadium Committee.
On a day-to-day basis, he oversees the operations of the Dallas Cowboys and team’s current and future stadium venues. His work involves managing the organization’s 300 employees, including the coordination of the Cowboys entire Player Personnel department and overseeing the salary cap and all major player contract concerns.
Jones is a member and past president of the Dallas Chapter of the Young Presidents’ Organization. He serves on the board of directors for the SMU Athletic Forum, Cotton Bowl Athletic Association, Episcopal School of Dallas and Circle Ten Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Jones is also a member of the Dallas Citizens Council.
