SMU Cox Recognizes Dallas/Fort Worth Entrepreneurs at the 17th Annual Dallas 100™ Awards
Dallas (SMU) - In its 17th year, the Dallas 100™ Awards, presented by the SMU Cox Caruth Institute for Entrepreneurship, recognized the top 100 fastest growing, privately held companies in the North Texas area. The success of these companies indicates the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in North Texas, as these 100 companies combined to generate sales of $3.6 billion in 2006, and grew average sales 190 percent from 2004 to 2006.
The top 100 companies were recognized at an awards ceremony at the Meyerson Symphony Center November 7, with keynote speaker Michael G. Staffaroni, president and director of Heelys Inc. and Patrick F. Hanmber, senior vice president and director of Heelys Inc. Huntley Paton, publisher of The Dallas Business Journal, and David Johnson, with 1080 KRLD Newsradio, served as emcees for the event.
Taking the top spot in this year’s Dallas 100™ Awards is the Carrollton-based Internet retailer, Woot, Inc. Founded by electronics wholesaler Matt Rutledge in 2004, Woot Inc. pioneered the "one deal a day" business model on the Internet, offering a single discounted item each day. Woot.com is also home to an active community of members who share their opinions of products on the site’s many forums. In the last three years, sales at Woot have increased to 10 times that of its first year and nationwide membership has grown to 1 million strong.
In order to qualify for the Dallas 100™, a company must be an independent, privately held corporation, proprietorship or partnership (not a subsidiary of a parent company) as of May 1, 2007; be headquartered in the Dallas area; have had sales of more than $500,000 in fiscal 2004; have had sales of not more than $75,000,000 in 2004; have a three-year sales history reflecting growth; and, have a credit report and character satisfactory to the Dallas 100™, determined at the sole discretion of the Dallas 100™.
