BusinessWeek Again Ranks SMU Cox
Among the Nation's Top 25 Undergraduate Business Programs

Dallas (SMU) -- In its second annual ranking of undergraduate business programs, BusinessWeek has again ranked SMU’s Cox School of Business as one of the top programs, placing 24th in the nation.

Thirty percent of the ranking was based on surveys of more than 77,000 graduating seniors majoring in business, with a recruiter survey accounting for 20 percent of the ranking. The ranking also considers starting salaries (10 percent), which schools send the most students to top MBA programs (10 percent), and several measures of academic quality, including faculty-student ratios and average SAT scores (30 percent). Additional information regarding the criteria can be found at http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/07_12/b4026073.htm.

Based on these criteria, SMU Cox excelled in the following categories:

#7 in the student survey
#6 for average SAT score
#20 for sending the most undergraduates to top MBA programs

In addition, Cox BBA Students gave the Cox School grades of  A+ for “teaching quality”, “facilities and services”, and “job placement.”  When asked for feedback on the Cox experience, two students offered the following perspective:

I feel that the Cox School of Business has a true edge over other business schools because the teachers focus primarily and frequently on how business is actually conducted in the real world. Networking is not just encouraged on campus at Southern Methodist University. Students literally seem like they were born to network. The combination of pragmatic business acumen and making connections with peers is what Cox does better than anyone else.
SMU offers three outstanding things that can't be measured with test scores or any other quantitative methods: professors, location, and access to a plethora of the country's top companies in our backyard. We go to college to better ourselves as educated people and to get a great job. There is a senior executive of nearly every company in the world working in a office five minutes from campus that graduated from SMU. They all want to hire the next up-and-coming SMU graduate. Few schools in the world can offer that, and it should be the defining criteria for any business school.

A complete list of school rankings can be found at BusinessWeek.

"Our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends work hard to make the Cox School a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and experience for our students," said Albert W. Niemi, Jr., dean of the Cox School. “We are delighted with BusinessWeek’s ranking of the Cox BBA program, but we realize there are limitations to every ranking’s methodology. We will continue to stay focused on the school’s mission by placing even greater emphasis on the overall quality of the program and providing an outstanding experience for our students.”

One of the Nation’s Most Selective BBA Programs
Year after year, entrance into the Cox School’s BBA Business Scholars Program becomes more competitive. The Class of 2010 includes 129 students who turned down more than 350 offers of admission from other schools in favor of guaranteed admittance to SMU’s highly ranked business school. The quality of Cox BBA students also continues to improve, with an average SAT score of1393 (combined math and verbal) for the admitted Class of 2007.

In addition to being recognized for its academically rigorous undergraduate business program, SMU was recently commended by the Fiske Guide to Colleges as a training ground for the business elite of Dallas, and for those who may lead the state of Texas someday.

The Cox School offers an exceptional educational experience distinguished by an outstanding faculty, a strong global network, a strategic location in one of the world’s best cities for business, and a number of innovative programs, centers, and institutes that keep students on the leading edge of business.
