Cox School Embarks on Third Year of Partnership with Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children Business Leadership Center Introduces Cox MBAs to the World of Non-Profits
For more than 80 years, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) has treated children across the state for orthopedic conditions and learning disorders without charging a patient family or billing insurance. In 2003, one of the hospital’s board members approached the Edwin L. Cox Business Leadership Center (BLC) with the idea of creating an opportunity for Cox MBA students to learn about governance and consulting in non-profit organizations. In the spring of 2004, the BLC arranged for a handful of MBA students to take on nine MBA-level projects for the hospital. Students delivered recommendations ranging from developing a strategic community partnership plan for the redevelopment and maintenance of a nearby park, to preparing a feasibility study regarding the hospital’s interest in adding childcare for its employees. The program not only gave students a glimpse into the escalating business of health care, but it instilled a sense of “servant leadership,” exposing them to ways MBAs can utilize their skills to give back to the community.
This spring marks the third year of the unique partnership between the Cox School and TSRHC. Each year the program has grown both in length of engagement— this year the program expanded to five weeks—and in the number of students participating. “There is a buzz in the hallways about this program,” explained Jason Scoggins, associate director of the BLC, who is spearheading this project. “The students who participated the last two years have become our best marketers for the program. They want to tell everyone about their experience.” This year, a significant number of students returned to the program for a second time, proof that the program is a success.

While the popularity of a program is one measure of success, a better measure is the benefit that this program gives back to TSRHC. Cox MBAs give more than 1,800 pro bono consulting hours to the hospital each year, resulting in measurable financial gain for the hospital after it implements the students’ proposals. One of the projects in 2005 focused on alternative solutions for the hospital’s existing language translation services. By following the recommendation of Aneshia Campbell (PMBA 55), Joel Hargus (MBA ’06), Sarah Monning (MBA ’06), Aaron Morales (PMBA 51), and Terrance Turpin (PMBA 56), the hospital realized an annual savings of $24,000.
“Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children is always honored to participate in this unique program with the SMU Cox School of Business,” said Bob Walker, executive vice president and administrator at TSRHC. “We are extremely impressed with the creative yet practical ideas the students presented, and as a result, we implement many of their recommendations. We are grateful for the friendship and support of the Edwin L. Cox Business Leadership Center.”
