SMU Cox Caruth Institute Director Named to Executive Counsel
Jerry White Appointed to Leadership Role by the National Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers

Dallas (SMU) — SMU Cox School of Business announced today that Jerry White, director of the Caruth Institute for Entrepreneurship, has been asked to join the National Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers (NCEC) Executive Council.

The NCEC was established in 1997 for the purpose of continued collaboration among university entrepreneurship centers, under the sponsorship of the Kauffman Foundation, NASDAQ, and Beacon Venture Capital. It is the vehicle by which the top established entrepreneurship centers, as well as the new emerging centers, can work together to share information, develop special projects, and assist each other in advancing and improving their centers’ impact. The consortium seeks to become a focal point for the entrepreneurship centers across the United States and the world to continue the advancement of entrepreneurial excellence.

“We are thrilled to have Jerry join the NCEC Executive Council,” said Dr. Donald F. Kuratko, professor of entrepreneurship and executive director at the Johnson Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation at the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University and president of the NCEC. “He is one of the true pioneers of entrepreneurship education and we are fortunate to have his expertise on our executive level.”

From its humble beginnings operating out of one small office, the Caruth Institute has grown to keep pace with the burgeoning field of entrepreneurship. Since its founding, the Caruth Institute has garnered local, national, and international recognition. This fall, the Institute celebrated its 100th offering of Starting A Business, a certificate course open to the business community that has trained more than 6,700 successful entrepreneurs, including Lee Posey, chairman and founder, Palm Harbor Homes, Inc. (NASDAQ: PHHM) and Garrett Boone, co-founder and chairman, The Container Store. In 2005 Entrepreneur magazine ranked the Caruth Institute #5 among the top 100 entrepreneurship programs in the nation, as ranked by program directors, faculty, and alumni.

Jerry F. White has taught courses in entrepreneurship since 1972, educating and counseling more than 22,000 aspiring and practicing entrepreneurs throughout the United States and Canada. A pioneer and expert in his field, he has co-authored two books, The Entrepreneur’s Master Planning Guide (Prentice-Hall) and Administering the Closely Held Company (Prentice-Hall), and has published articles in numerous business journals, including the Harvard Business Review and the Journal of Small Business Management.

“The Caruth Institute for Entrepreneurship was founded at SMU’s Cox School of Business in 1970 as one of the first university-based entrepreneurship centers in the United States. Jerry White has been the driving force behind our entrepreneurship program for the past three decades,” said Albert W. Niemi, Jr., Dean of the Cox School of Business. “The Cox School and the business community of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex are lucky to have him on board.”

Established at SMU in 1970 by Dallas entrepreneur and philanthropist W.W. Caruth, Jr., the Caruth Institute for Entrepreneurship offers education and training for today’s entrepreneur who competes in a rapidly changing, fast-paced, technology-driven environment. The entrepreneurship program offers 18 graduate level courses and two undergraduate level courses in entrepreneurship. Other Institute programs, such as the Dallas 100™ Awards and the Southwest Venture Forum, promote the innovation and vast business acumen of area entrepreneurs.
