Cox MBAs Apply Business Skills to Non-profit Organization Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children Teaches the Importance of Service Leadership
DALLAS (SMU) – SMU Cox School of Business announces its continued partnership with Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC). As part of the Business Leadership Center (BLC) <http://blc.cox.smu.edu>, SMU Cox is participating in the second-annual program with TSRHC which began March 11. The program not only gives students a glimpse into the escalating business of health care, but it instills a sense of “servant leadership,” exposing them to ways MBAs can utilize their skills to give back to the community.

On their first day students learned about non-profit activities in Dallas along with the TSRHC culture, which exposed them to the many ways an MBA can offer valuable skills within a non-profit organization. At the end of the afternoon, students were presented with a list of MBA-quality projects to prepare for the Hospital. They have three weeks to prepare project proposals and return to present to several TSRHC board and staff members on April 1.
Consulting Projects include:
• Development of a PTO Policy
• Analysis of Spanish Interpreting and Translation Services
• Medical Records Storage Analysis – Digital Medical Records vs. Current Paper Patient Records
• Cost/Benefit Analysis of becoming a Magnet Status Hospital
• Physician Order and Prescription Analysis – Electronic Prescriptions
• Analysis for a Comprehensive Contract Management System
• Public Relations and Advertising Analysis

“We are delighted to be working again with Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children not only because of their outstanding strategic approach to organizational operation, but also because of the unique and truly special role they play in the Dallas community,” said Paula Strausser, Director of the Edwin L. Cox Business Leadership Center. “Conversely, their top executives were very pleased with the work accomplished last year, and they know they can trust SMU Cox to provide a program that benefits our MBA students and provides high-level consulting expertise to the Hospital in return.”

For more than 80 years, TSRHC has treated children across the state for orthopedic conditions  and learning disorders, like dyslexia, without ever charging a patient family.

At the end of the learning experience, students will have learned:

• The history and values of TSRHC
• What drives the passion of TSRHC staff and volunteers
• What non-profit sector opportunities exist for the specialized MBA skill set
• What it takes to serve on the Board of Trustees
• How to achieve non-profit success in turbulent times

"Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children is honored to participate again in this unique program with the SMU Cox School of Business," said Bob Walker, executive vice president and administrator at TSRHC.  "We are so impressed with the creative yet practical ideas the students presented, and as a result, we plan to implement many of their recommendations.  We are grateful for the friendship and support of the Edwin L. Cox Business Leadership Center."
