SMU Cox School of Business Awards Distinguished Alumni
DALLAS (SMU) – SMU’s Cox School of Business proudly recognizes six graduates with its 2005 Distinguished Alumni Award. This year’s recipients included a banker, an executive in the insurance industry, three investment professionals, and a marketing executive.
In its 14th year of recognizing outstanding alumni, SMU recognized six graduates Wednesday, May 11, 2005. Kimberly L. Feil, Thomas W. Jasper, Norman P. Bagwell, and Martin L. Flanagan were named as Distinguished Alumni. Bert A. Getz and Mark E. Watson III received the Outstanding Young Alumni award.
Alumni are nominated based on their demonstrated civic and business leadership and success in their field of endeavor. Outstanding Young Alumni must be 40 years old or younger. Honorees have included both graduate and undergraduate alumni.
DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI
Kimberly L. Feil is a three time SMU graduate, earning Bachelor degrees in English and Journalism in 1981, and an MBA degree from Cox in 1984. Currently she is vice president and senior marketing officer of Kimberly-Clark Corporation, where she is responsible for accelerating innovative marketing and brand-building practices across the company’s North Atlantic organizations. Kim oversees the North American and European Marketing Services groups, which include marketing research, media services, promotion and interactive services, as well as the company’s design center. She is responsible for establishing a Marketing Center of Excellence that emphasizes best practices and vigorous business processes among the company’s brand teams and marketing specialists. Additionally, she works with the company’s marketing, research and customer development executives in creating and commercializing new products. Kim has been a guest speaker in the classroom as well as for student organizations, and she is a longstanding member of the Cox Associate Board, where she mentors students and enjoys helping them achieve their goals. She was awarded the SMU “M” award in 1981, and Ad Age Magazine will feature her as one of their “Women on the Move” in their June issue.
Thomas W. Jasper received his BBA from Cox in 1970. He is CEO of Primus Financial Products, and its affiliates. Prior to joining Primus Financial, Tom served for 17 years as a key executive of Salomon Smith Barney Holdings, Inc. Tom created Salomon’s interest rate swap business, a major profit center with annual revenues in excess of $125 million. He also founded ISDA, served as its first co-chair, and worked to establish ISDA as the world’s preeminent swap association. In 1990, he began to build Salomon’s Asian investment banking team and became the chief operating officer – Asia Pacific Region in 1994, establishing the region as the firm’s fourth operating center with revenues of $100 million. By 1996, he was appointed global treasurer of Salomon, Inc. He became chair of Salomon Swapco, Inc. and continued as the global treasurer of Salomon Smith Barney until late 1998. Jasper has been named to Risk magazine’s Hall of Fame as one of the most influential risk managers in the 20-year history of the derivative markets. He serves on the Boards of Phoenix House Foundation and the Wellspring Foundation.
Norman P. Bagwell was among the first graduating class to receive the accounting degree designation from the Cox School. He earned a BBA in 1985 in addition to a BA in History. Norm assumed the role of President of Chase Dallas in July 2004. He previously served as President of Bank One Dallas from 1998-2004. He joined Bank One, Dallas predecessor of MBank Dallas in 1985. Prior to this, Norm managed the Dallas Corporate Banking Division from 1995-1998. This division managed the commercial banking needs for companies headquartered in the Dallas area. He also spent 10 years in the Mortgage Finance Group serving as manager from 1992-1995. Under Norm’s direction, the Mortgage Finance Group of Bank One became known nationally as one of the premier service providers to the mortgage banking industry. Norm is immediate past Chairman of the Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the Dallas Citizens Council, Board of Directors of the State Fair of Texas, The United Way Board of Directors, Board of Directors of the Dallas Arboretum and President’s Advisory Council for the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts Foundation. He is an active member of the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, the Dallas Chapter of YPO, and the Dallas Assembly. Norm is a former longstanding member of the SMU Cox Associate Board, and is a continuous mentor to Cox students. He is often a guest speaker on commercial banking for professors and through student organizations.
Martin L. Flanagan is the only alumni in Cox history to be named Outstanding Young Alumni and now Distinguished Alumni. He received his BBA from Cox in 1982. Marty is president and co-CEO of Franklin Templeton Investments. In this capacity, he is responsible for investment management and services, finance, technology, risk management, legal, and corporate development and planning. While serving as president, Marty has been instrumental in various investment management initiatives focused on enhancing the investment management teams, creating efficiencies by further advancing the organization’s global operating platform, and further enhancing the corporate planning and development process. Marty is a Certified Public Account; Chartered Financial Analyst; and a member of the Security Analysts of San Francisco, the International Society of Financial Analysts, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is a director of the San Francisco Opera Association and a member of the Investment Company Institute’s Board of Governors.
OUTSTANDING YOUNG ALUMNI
Bert A. Getz graduated from the Cox School in 1989 with bachelor’s degrees in finance and real estate. While at SMU, he served as captain of the SMU Lacrosse team for four years, treasurer and president of the organization. Bert was also a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity where he was president of his pledge class in 1986. Today Bert is Executive Vice President and Director of Globe Corporation, a diversified investment company focused on real estate investment and development, asset management and private equity investments. In the last ten years, Globe Corporation has acquired in excess of two million square feet of commercial property, developed over one million feet of commercial property and has built in excess of 100 homes under the name Merit Homes. Globe Corporation was founded in 1901 and is currently managed by fourth-generation Getz family members – Bert and his older brother George. Bert serves as director of Wintrust Financial Corporation (NASDAQ – WTFC), IMS Companies LLC, and HDO, Inc. Within Wintrust, he also serves as director of Libertyville Bank & Trust and Wayne Hummer Asset Management & Trust Company. His civic contributions include serving on the Zoning Board of the Appeals for the Village of Northfield, Trustee of the Brookfield Zoo, Director of Children’s Memorial Hospital and Trustee of The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey. Bert, his wife Susan and their three children live in Northfield, Illinois, a northern suburb of Chicago.
Mark E. Watson III received his BBA in finance from Cox in 1986. While a student at SMU, Mark served as a business school representative to the Student Senate and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, the sailing team, and the ice hockey team. In 1989, he received his JD from the University of Texas. Mark was elected President and Chief Executive Officer of Argonaut Group Inc. in January 2000. He joined the board of directors of the company in 1999, and was appointed Executive Vice President of Argonaut Group and Executive Vice President of Argonaut Insurance Company, the principal subsidiary of Argonaut Group. Prior to joining Argonaut, Mark was a principal of Aquila Capital Partners, a San Antonio-based investment firm. He has served as director, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Titan Holdings Inc., a property and insurance company. Mark currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Texas Business Hall of Fame, the Hidalgo Foundation, the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation, Inc. Mark is Director and Vice President of Leadership & Development of the Texas Lyceum, and a Director of the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center. He is a member of the President’s Council at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Mark has been invited to speak at the Management Briefing Series and the Business Leaders Spotlight Series, and he plans to do so in the near future.
