SMU Cox School of Business Awards Distinguished Alumni
DALLAS, Texas (SMU) - A banker, economist, stock trader, transportation executive, and manufacturing and media mogul are all recipients of this year's Distinguished Alumni Award from SMU's Cox School of Business. In its 11th year of recognizing outstanding alumni, SMU's Cox School of Business honors five graduates Friday, May 17, 2002. Craig Duchossois, William J. Rainer, and Tyree B. Miller were named as Distinguished Alumni. Thomas W. Horton and Marci Rossell were awarded the Outstanding Young Alumni award.
Alumni are nominated based on their demonstrated civic and business leadership and success in their field of endeavor. Outstanding Young Alumni must be 40 years old or younger. Honorees have included both graduate and undergraduate alumni.
DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI
Craig J. Duchossois holds a BBA and MBA degree from SMU Cox. Duchossois currently serves as president, chief executive officer, and director of Duchossois Industries Inc., a diverse conglomerate of industrial manufacturing companies and television and radio stations ranked No. 127 in the Forbes Private 500 and No. 11 on Crain's list of Chicago's largest privately held firms. He is on a number of business and community boards, including Bissel, Inc., Churchill Downs Incorporated, Culver Educational Foundation, and the University of Chicago. While at SMU, Duchossois received the AFA-AFROTC Award for Outstanding Senior Cadet. He served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1968 to 1971. He and his wife Janet [Jackson] Duchossois, who also holds a BBA from SMU Cox, have two daughters, one of whom is also an SMU alumna.
Tyree B. Miller received his BBA and MBA from SMU Cox. Miller currently serves as executive vice president and head of Global Treasury and Trade Services. He began his banking career with Mercantile National Bank, a Bank One predecessor, in 1976 as a credit trainee. He held various positions before being named president of MBank Dallas, N.A. In February 1996, he was named managing director of Bank One's Commercial Banking Group. He was chairman and chief executive officer of the South Region for Bank One Corporation as well as Bank One, Texas. Miller serves on the Executive Board of the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University and is a member of the Young President's Organization. A Dallas native, Miller, his wife Jan, and their four children reside in Hinsdale, IL.
William J. Rainer is chairman and chief executive officer of OneChicago, the joint venture formed by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Inc., the Chicago Board Options Exchange, and the Chicago Board of Trade to trade single stock futures contracts. Rainer served as chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission from August 1999 until January 2001. Under his leadership, the commission embarked on unprecedented regulatory reform, including support of the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000, which allows the introduction of single stock futures. Prior to this appointment, Rainer was chairman of the United States Enrichment Corporation from 1994 until 1998. In 1981, he co-founded Greenwich Capital Markets, where he served as managing director of the firm until 1987. Rainer earned his BA and MBA degrees from Southern Methodist University.
OUTSTANDING YOUNG ALUMNI
Thomas W. Horton, senior vice president of finance and chief financial officer for American Airlines, Inc., received an MBA from SMU Cox in 1985. As chief financial officer, Horton is responsible for the corporation's finance functions including financial planning, treasury, corporate development accounting, and investor relations. Horton joined American Airlines in 1985 as an analyst in financial planning and held several management assignments in finance until 1994 when he was named vice president and controller for the airline. Horton had served as American's vice president-Europe since January 1998. Based in London, he was responsible for American's international activities in Europe. Prior to joining American, he worked in public accounting at Peat Marwick. Horton is a native of Hampton, Va. He and his wife, Janet, have two children.
Marci Rossell, holds a Ph.D. and B.S. in economics and a BBA from Southern Methodist University. As CNBC's former chief economist, Rossell covered all aspects of the economy including the Federal Reserve Bank and major economic indicators. She joined CNBC from OppenheimerFunds, Inc., where she served as vice president, corporate economist, and investment spokesperson. At Oppenheimer, she worked closely with portfolio managers and research analysts to develop investment themes and ideas for Oppenheimer's equity and fixed-income product lines. She also served as spokesperson for the company's investment strategies and market outlook. Prior to joining OppenheimerFunds Inc., she was a manager for Deloitte & Touche LLP, where she provided economic consulting and expert testimony for clients. Rossell launched her career at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas where she provided economic analysis of national and local issues to the bank's president.
