30th Anniversary - Associate Mentor Board

DALLAS (SMU) - Last month, the Cox School of Business celebrated six school milestones: the 80th anniversary of the BBA Program, 50th anniversary of the MBA Program, 30th anniversary of the Associate Mentor Board, 30th anniversary of the Caruth Institute For Owner-Managed Businesses, 25th anniversary of the Maguire Energy Institute, and the 10th anniversary of the Business Leadership Center. Two events brought students, alumni, supporters, staff, and faculty together to salute these six entities.
On Friday, September 29, 175 Cox friends, alumni, and Executive and Associate board members celebrated at a formal dinner at the Park City Club. Attendees included Edwin L. Cox, the Dallas oilman after whom the school is named, Mabel Caruth who, with her late husband, endowed the Caruth Institute, Cary Maguire who endowed the Maguire Institute, and Bobby Lyle who founded the Associate Mentor Board. President Gerald Turner and Dean Albert Niemi addressed the attendees and thanked all those who had contributed to making these anniversaries possible.
On Wednesday, September 27, alumni and students gathered in the school's Arthur Andersen Gallery for a celebration punctuated by a rousing performance by members of the Mustang Band. Edwin L. Cox, who had, as a student at SMU, been a member of the Mustang Band, was the event's speaker and led the cutting of a giant anniversary cake.
Named in 1978 in honor of Dallas businessman Edwin L. Cox, the Cox School first began in 1920 as the Department of Commerce at SMU. In 1921 the Department was renamed the School of Commerce. Over the years, the Cox School of Business has expanded, and enrollment in degree programs now exceeds 1,500 students annually. Programs include a BBA Program, a full-time MBA Program, the Professional MBA Program, the Executive MBA Program, and Executive Education.
The Cox School is ranked among the top business schools in the nation by Forbes, Business Week, U.S. News & World Report, and the Financial Times.
