Mayo Shattuck, co-chairman and co-chief executive officer of Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown, will speak on "Financing of the New Economy" as an introduction of the Cox School's expanded Information Technologies and Operations Management (ITOM) department.
Dr. Bezalel Gavish, chair of the Information Technologies and Operations Management department, will speak on the "Emerging Trends in E-commerce." Gavish is an acknowledged world expert in the field of telecommunications/e-commerce with more than 30 years of experience in industry consultation and research. He will introduce his fellow colleagues in the ITOM department -- Dr. Amit Basu, Dr. Joakim Kalvenes, and Dr. Neil Keon.

WHAT:

To meet the growing demand for education in telecommunications and e-commerce, the Cox School has expanded its Information Technologies and Operations Management department. The reception honors Cox's four new e-commerce and telecommunications faculty members. The new faculty share expertise in information technology, telecommunications, network design, and e-commerce.

HOW:
|
This event is open to the media and to the corporate community by invitation. The event will provide a forum to introduce these telecomm and e-commerce experts to the corporate community and to establish a dialogue for future projects involving both the community and the school.

VITAE:
|
Bezalel Gavish, Cox's Eugene J. and Ruth F. Constantin Distinguished Chair in Business and chair of the ITOM Department, has worked on numerous consulting engagements with industry leaders, including IBM, GTE, Xerox, and Motorola Satellite Business Systems. His research specializes in combinatorial optimization and stochastic models. He is editor-in-chief of Telecommunication Systems and Electronic Commerce Research Journal. Prior to joining Cox, Gavish headed the management of information systems (MIS) program at the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University. He received his bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. from the Technion Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel.
Amit Basu, Charles Wyly Professor of Information Systems, specializes in areas of e-commerce and virtual organizations, database management, intelligent systems in organization, and management information systems, process analysis and optimization, e-commerce strategy, and positioning. Basu is the area editor for knowledge and data management for INFORMS Journal of Computing. Prior to joining Cox's ITOM Department, he was professor of management in telecommunications and e-commerce at Vanderbilt University. He earned his bachelor's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi, India, an MBA from Southern Illinois University, and his master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Rochester Simon Graduate School of Management.
Joakim Kalvenes, assistant professor in Cox's ITOM Department specializes in network design, group decision support systems, and the use of information technology in the management of buyer/seller relationships. He earned his Ph.D. in management information sciences and an MBA in finance and operations management from Vanderbilt University. He also earned a master's degree from The Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration in Bergen, Norway, and a master of science degree in Industrial Mathematics from the Norwegian Institute of Technology in Trondheim, Norway.
Neil Keon, assistant professor in Cox's ITOM Department, specializes in pricing and resource allocation for telecommunications networks, and user behavior and network incentives. Keon received his Ph.D. and master's degree in systems engineering from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Engineering. Prior to that, he received a master's degree in systems science from the University of Ottawa and a bachelor's degree in commerce and management from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Keon is a National Science Foundation grant recipient.
