The Cox School of Business and Pricewaterhouse Coopers present
Founder & Chairman of Investor's Business Daily
William "Bill" J. O'Neil
WHO: As Founder and Chairman of Investor’s Business Daily, William "Bill" O’Neil heads a financial publication that reaches an audience of more than 840,000 and is America’s fastest-growing, large-circulation daily newspaper. In 1984, O’Neil recognized the individual investor’s need for better information delivered in a faster, more concise and readable format. In founding Investor’s Business Daily in 1984, he created the first serious competitor to The Wall Street Journal in over 50 years.
O’Neil is also the founder of William O’Neil & Co., the developer of the first U.S. historical stock database. This company was the starting point for O’Neil’s focus on the information needs of the individual investor. His goal was to provide data in a highly readable format to enable investors to quickly identify industry winners. O’Neil began his career as a stockbroker with Hayden, Stone & Co. in Los Angeles and, by the age of 30, had purchased a seat on the New York Stock Exchange.
In addition to these ventures, O’Neil created Datagraphs, an institutional chart service for money managers, and Daily Graphs, a retail chart service for individual investor. He also wrote How to Make Money in Stocks, a national bestseller.
O’Neil earned a BBA from SMU’s Business School in 1955.
