The FINA Foundation Business Leaders Spotlight Series presents
Chairman and CEO of Zale Corporation: Robert J. DiNicola
WHO: Putting over 25 years of direct retail experience at The Bon Marche, Macy’s, and Rich’s Department Store to work, Robert DiNicola, Chairman & CEO of Zale Corporation, has transformed it from an unhewed diamond to a sparkling jewel of specialty retailing.
Zales, the nation’s largest specialty retailer in jewelry, recently announced a 26% increase in the fiscal first-quarter net income with revenue of $254.2 million in the period ending October 1998. For the first time in the company’s history, Zales has been profitable for four consecutive quarters.
In 1994, DiNicola led Zales’ revival from the depths of Chapter 11 bankruptcy. He began upgrading existing stores and adding new stores, higher-end Bailey Banks & Biddle shops.
Today Zales has 1,100 + stores divided into three chains, mall-based Zales, Gordon’s,and Bailey Banks & Biddle. The company’s stability is ensured, in part, by the fact that its three chains cater to varying income levels.
DiNicola serves on the board of directors of the National Retail Federation, The SMU/Willis M. Tate Distinguished Lecture Series, and Zale Lipshy University Hospital.
