SMU’S COX SCHOOL MAGUIRE ENERGY INSTITUTE ANNOUNCES NAME CHANGE
The Cox School of Business’ Maguire Energy Institute, formerly the Maguire Oil and Gas Institute, has been renamed to reflect its expanded focus, not only on the oil and gas industry, but on other energy-related business as well. The lines of demarcation between different energy sources are becoming less and less distinct. The marketing, management, and alliances between different energy forms from oil to electricity are increasingly overlapping. The Maguire Energy Institute has been addressing these market shifts for some time and therefore has selected a name that more appropriately describes its endeavors.
In commenting on the name change, Cary Maguire, who provided funding to establish the Institute in 1974 and is a member of the University’s Board of Trustees and chairman of the Cox School Executive Board, said, "The oil and gas business is rapidly changing, and with the increasing interface of gas with the electricity business in providing energy to the consumer, we thought that the word "energy" would be more appropriate in the Institute’s name. Also, the word "energy" connotes an excitement that is appropriate for the upcoming millennium."
Albert W. Niemi, Jr., dean of the Cox School, also expressed the school’s desire to reach a broader audience via a name change consistent with the Institute’s focus and offerings. "This name change will position the Institute to grow in concert with an evolving energy industry."
The Institute's Director Allen Mesch said that the new name acknowledges the Institute's broad support from companies such as Enron Corp., TXU, and EDS as well as its ongoing commitment to "traditional" oil and gas businesses such as Fina, Inc.,
J. Cleo Thompson & Son, Hrubetz Oil Company, and Parker Drilling Company.
The Maguire Energy Institute promotes the study of policy, marketing, and management issues related to petroleum, natural gas, and electricity. The Institute conducts seminars and training programs focusing on the business, economic, and managerial aspects of the energy industry; hosts conferences to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information among educators, practitioners, and government officials; and provides material for students and teachers to foster a better understanding of the role of the energy industry in the world economy.
