James Smith, Cary M.Maguire Chair in Oil  and Gas Management, discussed TXU’s success  as the foremost energy producer in  Texas and the financial strain that its barely  deregulated monopoly had on Texans.“Residential  customers often pay higher rates  simply because they don’t compare the rates  charged by different companies,” said Smith.  “If you’re not shopping carefully, the companies  will charge what they can.”

Mel Fugate, management and organizations  professor, discussed some of the many perks  that come along with being the CEO of a  major company and why they occur.“The  worst answer, but the true answer, is because  everybody else does it,”Fugate said.

Dan Howard, chair of the marketing department,  discussed the marketing masterpiece  that airlines have created with their frequent  flyer programs.“The airlines have created  not only loyalty, but they have effectively  generated their own currency,” said Howard.

The Cox School  was noted as  being one of  only a handful of schools in the country  that offers a Hispanic marketing course.  Other universities include DePaul, Florida  State, and Our Lady of the Lake in San  Antonio, which now offers a Hispanic  marketing major.

Management and Organizations Professor  Mel Fugate commented on employees who  wear headphones while on the job. “Some  people say, ‘I put on the headphones. I have  a monotonous job and that keeps me entertained  or more stimulated and therefore  I’m more productive. It blocks out all the  distractions and background noise and  allows me to focus more,’” Fugate said.  “But the argument on the other side is,  well, if you’re sitting there listening to  music, is that impeding your workflow or  your productivity?”
