ABOUT SMU COX

Dean's Office

The Cox School of Business recognizes you have many choices for business education. And we understand that the school you select will have a profound impact on not only your professional career but also many other facets of your future. We are committed to providing an exceptional education—one that will equip you with the skills, experiences, perspectives, and relationships you need to be successful.

Small, Private-School Environment

Like a handful of business schools around the world, we bring a world-class faculty together with talented, ambitious students in a small private school setting. This intimate, collaborative environment allows for close interaction in the classroom and offers students ready access to professors outside the class. But at Cox, the classroom is only the beginning. Several attributes differentiate the Cox educational experience from other schools’ programs.

Strategic Location

The Cox School is located in—and closely connected to—one of the world’s leading economic centers. Among U.S. cities, Dallas is second only to New York City in the number of major corporate headquarters, thanks to its low cost of living, high quality of living, and myriad cultural and recreational opportunities. While the classroom serves as the core of a Cox education, the educational experience we offer reaches beyond the SMU campus into many of the leading companies in Dallas. Through an executive mentoring program, several speaker series, and alumni networking events, Cox provides convenient access to business leaders with insights and connections that can help you achieve your professional goals.

Strong Professional Network

Today, the Cox network is among the strongest business school networks in the world and one of the key ingredients in our overall value proposition. We recently received third-party validation of this when the The Economist ranked the Cox School #1 in the United States and the #7 in the world for “Potential for Network.” We were one of only two U.S. business schools ranked among the top 10 programs in this category.

What differentiates our network is its global reach and local touch. We have alumni chapters in 20 foreign countries, providing alumni and students around the world with access to social activities as well as professional advice and networking opportunities. In addition, in the past three years we have hosted alumni receptions in more than 20 U.S. cities from coast to coast. We invite alumni as well as prospective students and their parents to these receptions, allowing for unique exchanges among current and future members of the Cox community.

History of Innovation

Finally, the Cox School has a strong history of developing innovative programs and resources that give students a leg up on their peers. In 1970, we introduced the Caruth Institute for Entrepreneurship, one of the first such centers of its kind. We pioneered executive mentoring programs and leadership development centers for undergraduate and graduate business students. Our American Airlines Global Leadership Program, launched in 2000, and BBA Business Scholars Program, started in 2002, have been emulated but not matched by a number of other schools. These and other resources, including more than a dozen specialized centers and institutes, make the Cox educational experience truly unique.

I firmly believe that the Cox School—like any educational institution—will ultimately be judged by the accomplishments of our graduates. Our undergraduate, graduate, and executive education programs are designed to transform your understanding of business and the global economy, and equip you with the skills and relationships you need to succeed.
